need DW hand spring model 12 (porkchop w external nut)
« on: April 19, 2005, 03:28:00 PM »
Now I understand previous posts about early DW having springs made from piano wire. One of my old model 12s broke the spring that pushes the hand against the cylinder. Spring from newer model 12 and model 15 won't work because they are shaped different. The broken spring was indeed music wire, thinner than newer ones. The broken spring is .015 in diameter, about the same as the high E string on a guitar.

Anyone know where to look for this spring? Numrich doesn't think they have one.

DW used different stuff at times. My experience was a trigger return spring that changed from square cross section to oval. The oval gave a nicer letoff. If you can't get anything from the factory, try carloconnor@aol.com He may have a few older DW parts.

If all else fails maybe it is something you can make!!! The trigger return spring on an old win mod 94 looked alot like a paper-clip to me !! so when I decided to make one I simply "hardened" a clip and you know what.... It works fine.   Marty

make dw hand spring?

Racepres...this spring is a little torsion spring with 7 coils. If I were to use a guitar string (which is already stiff, high carbon steel) do i need to bake it or relieve it or whatever after i wind it? As you can see, I'm not a gunsmith or a metallurgist.

Brownie,
I think if you give Wolf Springs with the diameter of wire, the diameter of coil, the length, and the number of coils per inch, they can locate one that is close for you or make you a custom one.

Yea,,, I go w/ Rolltide on this one ... I never made a "coil" spring... guess ya could try it!!  Once shaped I would heat to "dull red" w/ a propane torch, then simply quench in water.... supposed to temper by reheat in molten lead ... but that step causes me probs so I just "cheat" and heat/quench/and GO.... still bet giving the dimensions to someplace like Wolf would be productive,   but can't hurt to have a bit of a trial either ...
