Prices for Handis at local shops?
« on: April 08, 2005, 02:07:56 PM »
Went to two different shops the other day about Handi's.  Got quotes for the SB2 with 30-30 barrel for $219.  That didn't seem out of line with chinese Wally World, around $190 this year I think.   Because a couple months ago they said it would be around $225 minimum.  So either the wholesalers or Wally World is on to the demand for them.  Plus the difference is worth it to me.  I hate to see mom and pop go out of business over a cup a coffee a day.  Any other people see prices getting closer to the big guys.

Out local BiMarts sell the Handis for $169-$199, they are an employee owned PNW chain, kinda between mom and pops and WM. Sportsmans Warehouse, a growing national chain, sells the Handis for $219 and the Ultras for $239, the BC and Target for $299.

I paid $183 for my 25-06 handirifle at Gander Mt . They sold it to me at the WalMart price. The local gunshops want $265 and up for the same rifle. I am not paying an extra $80 so Mom & Pop can retire early !

I just bought a .223 Handi for $200 as a supplier was running a sale on them that week and my gunshop passed that on to me. Normally, Handi's sell for $220 with Ultras going for $260. I understand why some shop at WalMart and I can never fault them for saving as much of their hard earned dollars as they can especially now with gas prices going through the roof.

While I only buy through my local gunshop, I receive a service that WalMart will probably be never able to provide. I can have forty questions answered on a Saturday or Sunday morning that range from reloading, bench shooting techniques, new hunting locations, and the other local knowledge that flows through the shop. I can also make trades at this gunshop if I ever need to. I have created many new friendships through this shop that will last a lifetime including the owner and his family.

Another reason to stay in touch with your local gunshop is if you have any problems you cant fix with your favorite deer rifle  two weeks before opening day my guy has a gunsmith that will do his best to get me going before opening day I now buy from both my local and walmart. There Ruger M77 compact in 308 sells for $463.00 The best price i have gotten from local gunshops is $590.00   Thats a savings of $130.00 !

Sportsmans Warehouse sells the Handi's for 219.00. Another shop near me sells the Ultra's for 269.00. We have a Walmart here they sell the Handi for 187.50. I try to buy from stocking dealers which Walmart here is not. They stock ONE NEF 12 Ga. Thats it.
shot placement is everything.

Local shop, $219 to $239 depending on caliber for the standard Handi. Last Ultra he had was a 25-06 and I have it. That was a couple of years ago. Paid $259 for it. Have never seen a Handi other than shotgun at any of Local Walmart's and I have three within 15 minute drive.

I have been getting prices on the Handi Rifle in .45/70 and GM wants $219, Cabellas $219, my local guy said $180-190. I will go with the local guy for sure for that price, won`t even check Wal-Mart even for a few bucks less. Jack.

None of the small shops around here have prices that match or better Walley World prices......but it just isn't as appealing to me to go there and buy one as it is to go into an actual gun dealers shop...

Mac,
I agree, it is pure enjoyment to visit a gun shop. My favorite, who has the largest selection of used rifles in Billings, admits he can not compete with Wal-Mart on new rifles. So he has specialized in the used gun market. He states that after Wal-Mart sells the gun, they come to him for ammo, mounts, rings, scopes, cases, and advice. And since Wal-Mart does not take trades, often he gets an offer to buy the the old toy at an agreeable price. He also specializes in customer service. He stands behind every sale. He has lots of experience and good advice. Obviously, he has adjusted to the changing markets and times. And is still making a living. Sometimes, at the gun shows, I hear shop owners complaining about the internet sales and chain stores taking their business. I guess they don't remember the '60's hit:"The Times They Are A'changing..."! And things are never going back to the old way. My advice to the complainers: Adjust to the changing times, or shut your doors. But don't expect me to assure your living or retirement at the cost of mine!

Now  don't everybody rush down here at once to get in on this deal, but I was at  a small gunshop the other day , looking over some great deals on some pretty nice sporterized Mausers and Springfields in various calibers and all at great prices, when all of a sudden I spied the familiar cinnamon laminate of a new ultra. I looked at the tag to see that it was a new .223, with the box and all the paperwork for a measly $550, no that is not a typo, $550 u.s. dollars. I questioned the owner and he said that price was definitely correct and that model was higher due to the wood and heavy barrel. I told him I would pass. I feel sure it is still there if anyone else is interested, I can give directions.
