Cleaning pellets - pest medicine?
« on: June 30, 2004, 07:51:24 PM »
Got some pesky cats that I'd like to chase off but not injure. Would cleaning pellets work, or would I have to go to a "soft" airgun? I've never used the pellets - I use pull throughs with patches on my guns.

lilabner,

Felt cleaning pellets, even in the less powerful springer rifle, must be used at least 3 at a time.  The more powerful springers need to have 4 or so shot at a time.  This is so you won't damage your rifle.  Felt pellets do not give the needed back pressure needed to keep from damaging the compression chamber.  If you really want to run off pesky dogs and cats get a paintball gun and bust them with a paintball.  The animal runs home with the tattletale marks for the owner to find.  Use a blood red color and many owners will think their favorite pet has been really shot.  Non lethal and it keeps you on the good side of the law(paintball guns are rated as non-lethal).  Small groups and tight lines to you.  Lawdog

I know what happened when the pet owners complained to the police after my cousin "splatted" a few of their pets.  They were told that the next time instead of a .60 ball of paint it could be a fast moving piece of lead and "fido/pussy" wouldn't be coming home anymore.  It worked.  Lawdog

I shoot an unloaded pump up gun - 1377, 397 or Sheridan. The noise scares the hell out of them.  They run like they have been shot.  Even my young cat who used to sneak outside learned her lesson when I shot at her with an unloaded 1377.  I shot at her outside at about 10 feet. I saw her fur puff  where the air hit her. Now if she escapes outside all I have to do is pick up the 1377 and cock it and she runs as fast as she can back inside.

This only works until the animals get used to the report.  I used to do the same thing but now when I shoot off any of my pellet guns our critters(cats and dogs) come running to see what I'm shooting at.  Who knows, maybe the old man has popped another bird/squirrel/rabbit and a free/easy meal is being served.  Lawdog

That's funny!  My old Basset hound used to do that when he heard me shooting my loud pumpers.  He'd wonder around for awhile where my targets were and look over at me like he was saying "Can't find it , Boss."  he finally gave up. Must figure I'm not a very good hunter.

Scare a troublesome cat?
What a creepy, nasty, inhumane thing to do.
When I lived in a small town all I had was a Benjamin pump up air gun. Quite a nice rifle and once scoped much more accurate than I thought it would be.
I had a garden behind my rented house with neighbors 20 feel either way.
Local pussys used the garden as a litter box.
NOT COOL! So I decided to scare them off.
I found one shot to the forehead right twixt the eyes would litterally scare them clear to death. Many never moved or twitched.
There were an abundance of the things that were allowed to run at large all night. Many never came home.
I have since bought a house in the boonies and peopl from the towns dump unwanted pussys at my place where they get into the garbage, spray around the flower beds, poop in the garden, but I have stopped the evil habit of airgunning them.
I have seen the light of righteousness and stopped that aweful practice.
The .17 hummer does a BETTER JOB AT LONGER RANGE!

The only problem with shooting one of the neighbors pet Kitty’s is you could end up in court, having a felony record and costing you a bundle of money.  Think the old adage of shoot but don’t tell will work?  Not with all the noisy neighbors with cameras that have nothing else better to do than watch the neighbors.  It happens all the time all over the U.S.  Lawdog
