Had a chance yesterday to briefly stop at the museum at New Market, Virginia (related to VMI - where the class of cadets went into battle and held their own!)

Very helpfull people there at the museum.

The mortar looks like it might be the 24 PDr. The transition from bore to powder chamber also appears to be a straight line and not a radius like on the Federal Mortars. Is that correct?

Yes it is a 24 pounder.

BUT it is a REPLICA. Therefore the attention to details may not be there!

If it was an original I would have made many measurements.

The replicas at New Market are supposed to be correct in every detail copied from the original except the 12 PDR nobody's ever seen authentic 12 PDR.

There are a bunch of mortars at the Petersburg NP. They include a reb iron model.
Nice shots of the Agar and Williams. I didnt know that they have an Agar
at New Market.
The Williams would be an intersting machining project for the more serious minded fellow. Note how the trunnions are mounted. A slipped on ring that is set screwed.

Thanks for the note on Petersburg. I WILL get out that way sometime as I have to make a trip out to Ft. Lee.

The collection AT VMI is also very interesting, but I didn't make a note of looking to see if there were any mortars there. It also is on the way to Ft. Lee as is Appomatox.

Thanks for posting the pictures of the Williams gun and the Union Repeating Gun/Ager. If you have any more of the Union Repeating Gun/Ager would like to see them. I have a Williams and a Union Repeating Gun

Wilson Ager patented the gun in England for the American Arms Company who bought the patent sometime before 1855. The inventors name/names aren't known for certain. The gun didn't sell well in the US. Lincoln bought 10 at $1350 each for the Union Army and a couple of months later McClellan bought 50 at $735 each. They were used at the siege at Yorktown, then put in storage and most were scrapped at the end of the War.

Here's my Union Repeating Gun/Ager..friend took the picture about a month ago. .... .58 caliber..uses a Minie..40 grs is plenty of powder for short range shooting..think the service load was 60 grs or so. Gun uses "chargers" ..early steel cartridge primed with a musket cap. I'm still working on wheels for the carriage. Lyle
