8mm Mauser
« on: April 08, 2005, 07:37:42 PM »
Can anyone tell me where to find reloading data for an 8mm Mauser with a 185 Core-Lokt bullet?  I've checked every site that I know of and can't find much of anything except 150 and 170gr. Hornady loads.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

With what powder?  You can use the data for the next heaviest bullet and work up a load.  For instance.  Accurate Powder lists ...for 8mm 'J' (light loads for older guns or with .318 bore)
170 gr  w/ 4350  =43.2 to 48.0 grs max @ 2262 fps
200 gr  w/ 4350  =39.6 to 44.0 grs max @ 2039 fps

so if you start at about 40.0 grs of 4350 and work up to a load near 46.0 grs, you should be right in there.
They also list for a .323 bore (if you are sure) with hotter charges...however with different powders.
look at www.accuratepowder.com
....make it count

8 MM Mauser Load

I get good accuracy with my sporterized 8mm Mauser using 180 grain Nosler BTs with IMR 4064. I use 43 grains. Try starting lower and build up. IMR 4064 may be your powder. I also get good accuracy with 200 grain Speer Spitzers and 44 grains of Varget. You may want to give Varget a try.

Val,

I too am looking for a "better" powder to load my 8x57.  I've loaded the 185 Rem CLs, 200 SMK, 200 Speer SP, and 220 SGKs but am not pleased with any of the powders so far.  I have not tried either of the powders you use.  Like heavy for caliber bullets and think the 200 Speer bests my hunting needs best.  So.... Have you had a chance to run your loads above across a chronograph?  If not, Got any idea of the velocity your getting with the 200 Speer?

Speer 200 Muzzle Velocity

Ray,
The chronographed muzzle velocity of my Speer 200 grain spitzers load is 2265 fps. I have the sporterized K98, an original Milsurp Russian capture K98 and a Yugo M48. They all like the 200 grain Speer spitzer load.

I use the Serria 220 SGKs with H4895@ 47.5grs and outta my M48 they are not too hot, I would not use this load in a older action unless I was real sure of its quality.

This is not a US book load it is closer to the eruopeian load and only for .323 barrels.

I have a friend who loaded the 185 Corelokt with 45.0 gr of RL15 at 2350 fps. He liked the load in his 5x57.  I believe the 185 Corelokt was designed for the 8mm Rem Mag. ----Don't know how it performs at lower velocity in the 8x57 and on deer.

I have been working with the Hornady 195g psp, and IMR 4064. 48g of 4064, Rem brass, Win lrp, and the 195 bullet gives 2530 fps. The load that worked  best for me is 48 1/2 g, and that gives 1" groups., and a stout thump on the shoulder. The other powder that has worked good for me is Win 748. I have been shooting 150s, 170s, 196g Normas and the Hornady 195s. All bullets have shot at least 1 1/2" groups.
