Have there been any worthwhile developments since 1906?
« on: April 11, 2005, 09:09:58 AM »
To hear some tell it, there hasn't been any progress at all since 1906. That can't be right. What big milestones in progress have we had since then?

There are "arguably" huge advancements/progress made with regard to guns made since 1906. Not the least of which would include.

specific needs guns (varmint, dangerous game, extreme range)
safety (better materials, better engineering, better testing)
stock materials (many more options to fit the need)

and of course ammo including
powders (non-corrosive, better lot to lot consistency, more varieties)
bullets (game specific, VLD, varmint, premium)

optics (better quality, more durable, higher magnification, variables)

Although they may not have the same historical/sentimental value I believe newer guns are much more accurate and consistent.

Only two of any major concern: 1911, and when Nosler developed their partition bullet.

Non-Corrosive  powder, the rest would have happened eventually.

Modern fogproof, waterproof optics.  You can't hit what you can't see.
Cheap, reliable electronic chronographs.
Nosler partition bullets, mentioned above.
Non-mercuric, non-chlorate priming.  Mercury ate brass cases, chlorate left salt in the rifle bore.
Our excellent series of IMR rifle powders didn't come along until the 1930s.  Before that, some smokeless powders incorporated tin (like the old DuPont 15 1/2 and 17 1/2 series), and left bores terribly fouled.

1) Weatherby Cartridges
2) Magnum  Cartridges
3) Ultra Magnum Cartridges

For Hunting, in my book, if it ain't Magnum, IT STAYS HOME WHERE IT BELONGS !

4) The M16/AR15 Rifle platform; too bad it isn't made in 375H&H and 458 Lott !!
Go MAGNUM/MAX LOAD or GO HOME !
Always use MUCH more gun than the minimum required to do the job.

Its a good thing there have been some significant changes too. Otherwise we would have one forum thread and it would be about 03 springfields with fouled barrels and crappy iron sights and how to make our 1911s shoot straight.
