Bog..... castor mounds
« on: August 13, 2004, 11:01:16 AM »
Had a little beaver job this morning- and set up a castor mounds set- actually, 2- i1 with a foothold, 1 with 330.

The beaver had a small channel off the main water into some taller grass- so I used that as my castor mound-  that is- the 330 fit perfectly, and then used the caster lure beyond that.

My question- do you use this type of set up when you find it- or do you prefer to use a set up on the bank where they can see the mound?

Steve,I don't hesitate to place a castor mound in the weeds. At times,I will make my own opening>I just step down a spot big enough for my 330 and a slot behind it for my mud.A bit of sloppy mud on those weeds, really sticks out.

I do it like Bog does.  The beavers nose will pick up castor smell and while swimming around looking will see the path to mound thru weeds and his nose is telling him thats where the smell is coming from too.    I use this set alot  and dont go looking up and down a waterway for the perfect spot.  Besides one doesnt want to catch those big fellars too far away fm the truck when you are trapping by yrself

I do this alot also. And as Rdfx wrote, the smell alone will draw them.

I also set the channels using  bait, usually a poplar sapling. I use one that is about an inch thick in the butt and use the  the whole sapling. I put also put some poplar bud oil on a cotton ball and tuck it in the limbs of the sapling for a little stronger smell.

I use the bait instead of caster if the channel is anywheres near the lodge or house because I believe that keeps the rest of the colony from becoming castor shy too fast.
