Hello to all, I'm new to the fourms. I enjoy reading the posts as they are very informative. I have a question about the Encore hand gun. I recently bought a 15" stainless steel barrel for the Encore. I don't have a scope on it yet, but I was thinking of a fixed 4x power Leopuld. My question is what kind of acuracy is this gun capable of at 100 yards. My 7mm-08 barrel shoots around a inch at 100yards, just wondering how the 45-70 barrel shoots. If I could ask another question, does anyone have a good deer load. Thanks Joe.

Theres a lot of variables to that question. How good a shot are you? How well do you handle recoil? How hot are your loads? I have a 450 marlin barrel that will shoot under an inch on a good day, but 1-1/2 - 2" is more the norm. Same thing with my 444 barrel. KN

KN has a point. Most guns shoot better than the shooter.

I've got a 12" contender 45/70 for sale on ebay right now that is an amazing shooter. It came on a gun that I bought for the frame and scope/mounts. Have no interest in keeping this chambering at this time, but I bought a box of factories to shoot through it just to experience the mighty 45/70. I was amazed at how well it printed off the bench at 50 and 100 with just "off the shelf" ammo.

This barrel is without a doubt way more accurate than I am.

Thanks for the reply's. I handle recoil very well, I think. The factory 300grain loads kicks less than my 44 SRH with cast 320 grain. I'm glad to hear the barrel will out shoot me! Thanks Joe.

I use a 45-70 Contender for deer. It has a ported 12" Bullberry barrel and 4X B&L. I load 59gr. Accurate 2015br under a 300gr. Hornady HP for 1600 fps. This load consistently shoots less than MOA. I have taken five whitetail with this combination, all one shot stops/kills. This load clocks about 1860 fps from a 18" Marlin.

Like Keoni I get extremely good accuracy from the ole 45-70 in a pistol length barrel.

I've got a 15" (no brake or porting) Encore barrel and with 58.5grs of Varget under a Rem. 300gr JHP it'll print one large jagged hole at 100 yds. with five rounds.

I'm sighted in dead on at 100yds and it shoots pretty flat from the muzzle out to 150yds but the last 50yds between 150 and 200 it really starts to run out of steam and prints a good 12 to 18" low.

I'm glad to hear about the great accuracy. Now what about a scope. I was thinking about a fixed 4x leopold. I want a scope that will last. I have a 2x leopold on my 7mm-08 barrel, but it doesn't have enough magnification for me. That one will go on the SRH 44.

I have a fixed 4x leopold on my BFR in 500 MAG and it works great.
