Picking it up tomorrow morning!!!
« on: March 21, 2005, 04:16:41 PM »
Yipee, my Super Blackhawk Hunter in .45 Colt is now at my local shop for a morning pickup!!!
Need some advice...  Barrel break-in: how do you guys do it with revolvers?  Brass:  is it all the same, or is some better than others?  I am planning on getting the feel for the gun with some cheap cowboy ammo that I will later reload.

Ordered a ring lapping kit today from Midway...  Anything else for me to think about?

Thanks,

Jim

You'll likely need a spring kit (Wolff) from Brownell's also.  If you plan on using lead (hard cast) then a throat eaming is proberly in order and will benefit you in the accuracy dept.
As far as brass, I've always heard that Federal and Starline is a bit stronger than most.

I'd of probably waited on the ring lapping kit and bought a barrel fire lapping kit instead. You'll need it!

Dakota one thing you can do that I have done with two super blackhawks that I have own and it worked wonderfully on both of them. Instead of buying a spring kit just take out the normal hammer spring and cut 4 loops off. (note don't take four loops off a super redhawk only take two) Then clean the burns off with sand paper or a fine file then use a fine file to make the end of the spring somewhat flat so it merrys up to the spring seat. Another thing I did while I had it apart one thing I've found with every ruger revolver that I have owned (about 6 of them) is when they grind the sears there is usually a burr left, if you know how to stone sears. It doesn't take much to clean it up (it's a small burr but it made all the revolvers I had have a kinda inconsistent trigger pull). the 4 loops off the spring dropped the trigger pull down to about 3-4 lbs and cleaning the sears made them alot crisper.
