Midway Closeouts

For those of you that are always looking for the next new toy (like me):

Midway is selling off a few at pretty good prices;  they have the
14" .256 Win Mag priced at $174, and a 14" .204 Ruger priced at $162... pretty cheap for new barrels. I couldnt stand the temptation, i got a .256 WinMag even though i already have the .256 in a short tube now. Its always been a favorite of mine anyway.

I am wondering if the .204 has gone over the way gun companies hoped it would?

slavage;

you are correct, it is the .357 mag necked down to .25 caliber. I have had mixed reports from various shooters, some say they love theirs, some say they had terrible accuracy with theirs...i like the cartridge personally, both barrels i have had so far shot well. Will have to see how this 14 incher will do. I have been thinking of trying it in a Carbine barrel just for fun, i am a sucker or about anything that shoots a .25 caliber bullet. Been wanting to try the .256 Max too, and probably will eventually get arouind to that one as well.

Sorry Slav, that only works with straight walled cases.  Once you make a .256 win mag cartridge out of the 357, it is a bottle neck cartridge and has to fit the chamber.

I love the round and it was my first Contender caliber.  I'm getting as good accuracy from it as my .223 and it's fun when people say "whatcha shootin'?..........HUH? whazzat?????"

Curtis;

 Thats one of my favorite things about contenders too... for far less than the cost of a full-blown custom rifle, you can get a jillion caliber variations. At the moment i have quarterbore contenders in 25/20, .256, .25/35, .25 TCU & 25 Bullberry, and will probably end up getting a .256 Max & a .257 JDJ soon.

Yes, i do have a fetish.  :oops:

Yes you do love the 25s.  The discussion a few months back on the 257 TCU piqued my interest and if I run across one I just may have to pick it up.

I just had to have both the Herretts and after that I thought I'd be done collecting.  As soon as I had those, I found myself wanting a few more "just to fill in the gaps" LOL.  It's a sickness, I tell ya!

My first barrel, 31 years go, was a 10" octagon .256Win Mag.  I still have it.  That started the "sickness" for me.  Not too long ago I stood up to the "sickness"....decided to get rid of some barrels.  Sold 5 in the last month.  Well....guess what I did yesterday....yep you're right..one of those 14" .256's is headed my way.  Oh well,  I knew that I wasn't cured...but I did gain a little ground.  I've always thought the little .256 would do very well in a longer barrel.  Guess we'll find out. Keep in touch on how it does.  GOOD SOOOTIN',  Walt  :)  :)

Hey there: I'm also a 25 man, I really love em. Alas, I don't have the 25 Bullberry. I know it's the 30-30 necked down to 25, but that's about all I know about it. Will probably have to have one. A really great 25 in the Encore is the 257 Roberts, it still amazes me.

Any of you 25 shooters please share info/loads for the 25 Bullberry. I feel the ole wallet and check book moaning already. It's a bad addiction when you get hooked on Encores and Contenders, ain't no hope.

All the best,

Casper_zip

P.S. The 257 TCU or 25 CopperHead will amaze you, too if you ever get one or both, both accurate and potent loads, and very economical.

Casper;

i usually refer to an article in the book "Wildcat Cartridges , Vol II" on the .25 Bullberry, i will have to look tomorrow, its on my desk at the office.

If i remember correctly, 87 grain bullets were up to about 2800 or so..i think the 75's will just top 3000. all this from a 14" barrel.

On their website, the load data posted is a bit conservative from Bullberry. The author's article indicated significantly faster speeds at safe pressures. I doubt there is much difference between it & the .257 JDJ, but just to be sure, i naturally had to have one of those cheap .256 barrels sent in to SSK.  :wink:

got the barrel in a few days back, then got sidetracked and have not yet had time to send it in, i also had another SSK rechamber planned at the same time. too many barrels, too little time.

Midway also has a .30 Carbine in 14" Super. I don't think it has it price reduces ... yet. While looking under the technical and use notes it noticed that Midway indicated that they won't ship to California. Does anyone know what's up with that? I purchased a .221 Remington not that long ago from them in 14". That ought to be a hoot.
Shoot safely.....shoot tomorrow.
