I'm curious - has anyone tried to chamber a Handi for .44-40?

I would tink it is possible to rechamber a .44 magnum barrel to the 44-40.  Throat may be little long, and the 44-40 originally used a .427" bullet as opposed to the .44 Magnum's .429". but if you reloaded it I think you would be ok, just size cast bullets .430" or buy .429" jacketed ones.

If it has a barrel and shoots bullets I am interested in it and if I don't have one I want one.  Never met a gun I didn't like.

A 44 mag barrel would not work, the chamber neck is too big at .456" for the 44-40 neck which is only .443".

a 45-70 shortened, and necked down to accept a .429(ish) bullet could be made to be an interpretation of the 44-40 or 44-60, but you'd need a custom reamer, and mark the barrel with something to indicate wildcat cartridge.

Hey guys,
 
Thanks for the answers and the link, I was aware of the case dimension differences. It was just a thought, seemed like I couldn't have been the only one to consider it. Does sound like a fairly involved and custom endeavour. I think I'll just make it a passing fancy for now.
