convert a 38 Security/ Speed 6 to 357????
« on: April 03, 2005, 11:39:07 PM »
I've been watching the auctions lately and I see some Ruger Security/Speed/ Service 6 revolvers in 38 spl for very modest prices.

Could these guns have their chambers reamed to 357 safely?

The basic gun is real sturdy. Just scheming on a cheap way to get a 357 - but I want to be safe too.

In a word, NO! The cylinder is also too short to accept .357, which is a good thing. Look around for a used GP100, SP101, or some of the S&W model .357's and then you can shoot .38's for cheap plinking. Be safe.

I don't see why not. There doesn't seem to be any differences in external dimensions that I can see. But why would you want to? You'll end up spending at least half of what the gun is worth doing it. Why not buy one in 357 instead. You'll probably diminish the value doing that to it any way.  KN

Contact Numrich/Gun Parts Corp.  They have a conversion .38 to .357 conversion kit for those revolvers.

Hey I appreciate the tip on Numrich.  I'll check that out.  I've done a little business with them over time.

I'll probably just keep my eye out for a 357 speed 6 (or Smith 65) but for a while on the auctions all I was seeing were 38's.  I was guessing the Sped 6 38's are probably on the same frame as the 357s.  All I was looking for was a cheap solid shooter.  Don't care about future resale value.  Biggest value for me is for a gun to work when I need it.
