Over the weekend, 60,000 people turned out for the National Rifle Association convention in Houston.
For decades, I railed against this strange and wholly American love affair and our perceived need for a national cache of some 200 million firearms. And for decades, I took the NRA counterattacks and, believe me, they counterattack in a way that should serve as an example to anyone whose rights are spelled out far more clearly than the infinitely debatable Second Amendment business about, "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."
But ahead of that, right off, first out of the gate comes Article I, the First Amendment: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion ... or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press. ..."
Suddenly it dawned on me, they were telling me that my right of free speech was dependent upon their right to bear arms.
