Leupold M8 2x is it really 2x?

Yesterday the wife and I we looking thru the Leupold M8-2x that is mounted on a handgun (I am secretly getting her to warm up to handgun hunting) and she noticed the scope was not really magnifying anything.  We got the 2x-7x Leupold scope that is mounted on a rifle and noticed the 2x rifle scope magnified while the pistol scope did not.  What is the real story?

had to chk.... Mine don't seem any different than my burris 1x or an old bushnell 1.5x Deffinitely not up to the old bushnell 2.5x All others I have are at least 3x and they show it!! Very odd that I never noticed this!!   Marty

Edit:   Have to change my mind ... while not up to the ole bushnell magnum phantom 2.5x it is showing some magnification over the 1.5x bushnell and 1x burris.... just that it has such a small field of view that it is deceiving... Marty
