Old fashion guy needs new powders

I guess I'm just old fashion but I still use 2400 and  Unique, . Who know of something better that's cleaner burning, with equal performance?

What caliber are you reloading?  In my .45 Colt, I really like HS-7...she seems real clean and outperforms my Unique and may group a little tighter.

SB,

I guess im still a little old fashiond too,, I still use unique for my utility loads but go to H110 or 296 for my hunting loads, This is for the 45 colt
and 44 mag and 41 mag. For my 454 i use IMR 4227. Nothing wrong with the Unique powder although it is a little dirty, But that keeps you on your toes cleaning after every shooting.........Joe..........

Im an old fashion guy too probably use more unique and bullesey then anything but if you want a good powder that burns simular to unique try power pistol ive had excellent luck with it.  As far as 2400 goes try aa9 its a little slower but burns clean. If you want to save some money try surpuls wc820 its the same thing as aa9 and about half the price. They have a faster burning version called wc820f that burns about the same as hs7 which is right in the ball park of 2400

Yes, I should of stated that the calibers I'm using these powders in were .44 mag,.41. mag, and .357 mag. I've all buy quit using Bullseye and use Win. 231 for my lighter loads. I've never been able to tell much difference between 2400 and Hodgdons H110. On the other hand Win 296, with it's "no variation" loading warning made me deside against this one? If I had to make a guess, I'd have to say Elmer Keith played a big part in my desicions on these powders. They have worked for several decades but, are very dirty, and make quite a mess if a large quantity of rounds are shot. And take extensive cleanup afterwards.

I still use a lot of Unique and a lot of 2400.  Yes, it is not as clean burning as some of the newer powders but I always expect some cleanup afterward.  I also use 231 and 296/H110.  I have found that some of the VihtaVuori Oy powders perform like the older WW630, or better and have used them in place of the Unique, but they take about the same amount of cleanup afterward.

Even with the dirtier powders, a range session with a couple of hundred rounds doesn't foul the piece enough to cause it to malfunction.  I'm looking for the accuracy and consistency of performance with the powders I use - cleanup I expect.  Mikey.

I'm not going to be much help on this one.  I've been trying to deplete my powder inventory and go to just two.  In that process, I decided I can't get away from Unique.  From 380, 9mm, 40 S&W, 45 ACP and up to moderate 45 Colt loads it can't be beat.  Even load it in 1 1/4 shot loads and reduced 45-70 cartridges.  If there was one pistol powder I'd be limited to, Unique is it.  Out of the other side of my mouth though, I do use H 110 in my 45 Colt hunting loads.

Is H110 cleaner burning than VV N110?

I guess I`m old fation too. Since the late 1970`s I`ve been loading Win-296 in all my heavy and hunting loads and Bullseye in all my plinking loads. I load for several different people and have had no trouble with accuracy with these powders in any of the different rounds, guns and bullet combo`s tried. I just had 3 guys ask me to load for them today. Frist order was 2,000 rounds of .30sp. with 158 gn. round nose bullets, 2.7 gn. Bullseye and Fed primers. We will probibly try a couple different drops of the Bullseye, but if past experiance holds anything from 2.5 to 3 gn`s. will shoot in all of their guns.

It has been well established by Hodgdon that H110 and W296 are the same powder, just different lots accounting for any loading differences.  Both powders should be used in near-max loads - however, some schuetzen shooters have used them in reduced pressure loads with outstanding results.

HS-7 was a favorite of mine, but it has been discontinued for some time; I now use AA-7 instead.  AA-9 is clean-burning and accurate in both the .41 and .44 Mags, especially for silhouette use where the combination of power/accuracy is in demand.  I've had good luck with BlueDot and X-800 instead of Unique (which I no longer use) although they are both slower burning.  How old is your lot of Unique?  I ask because Alliant re-formulated Unique several years ago, resulting in a cleaner-burning propellant.

Powers close to Unique + cleaner, SR4756. WSF, 231.  Others for 2400, AA#7, H110/296 (full power loads) Power pistol, and there's a few more I cant think of right off hand. Always had a love-hate with Unique, hated the flakes and soot it left, liked the accuracy that could be obtained at times.

I've always used H110 and i like 2400. Unique and No. 9 is OK. I'm not changing powders I may switch to W296. I've never used it. Guess I'm not much help. :D
