Quality of fiber optics?
« on: April 20, 2005, 06:25:24 AM »
Can anyone tell me if there are varying levels of quality in fiber optics sights? I got a williams peep set for my 35 Rem. The front FO pin has very poor visibility at different light levels. I don't like it, and would like to replace it with something better.

Are you shooting with the cutout hood in place? Try it without the hood. The original fibre was red on my sights. I changed mine to green, as the human eye is more sensitive to green.

There's a tradeoff between small and sortof bright, which is still good out to 200yds, versus big, bright and fuzzy which is barely usefull at 100yds. Personally, I like the small fibre.

The Marlin cutout hoods block too much light, so I remove the hood when I'm in the field. I use the hood to protect the sight in storage and transit.

I put a Williams FireSight on the front of my 336 a couple of months ago, to go with the peep sight.  I took it out twice to sight it in and play with it.  I was going to clean it the other day and found that the fiberoptic part was gone! Rather disappointing.  I am back to the blade front sight I was using before.

Ok!
Searching through other posts I read someone used a gold bead. my gun shop could not find one in their inventory so I picked up a shotgun ivory bead, and that made a nice change. The fiber optic pin was horrible with or without the gaurd. The ivory bead without the gaurd is superb, but with the guard, it is so-so. Ill hunt without the gaurd.

Thanks for everyones input.

SM,

I recently replaced the front-sight on my 1895 GS Marlin 45/70. It is a William's fire-sight (0.060" dia.) bright orange in color. The original hood kept the sight "in the dark", so I dropped it off at my g'smith and in a few min.  he removed most of the overlying metal from the hood, making it a good cover for the front sight, letting-in the max. available light. Cost, $5.00. Works for me!
