Just wanted to see what you southern zone hunters think of the new Sat.opener for deer.I liked the Monday opening day,as it was kinda like a holiday for us.I think it will feel a little weird having the opener on a Sat.
What do you guys think about it?

I know what you mean the Monday opener is a tradition. But I don't see it as a bad thing. The only thing I have to do is take another vacation day the Friday before. Who knows if I have a good opening day I might spend the rest of my vacation in Fla. or Vegas. :-)

Seriously I think its good for those who can't get the Monday opener off of work or school.

I'm not too happy with the new Saturday opener and my reasons are mostly selfish...First, I favor archery hunting over all others...I do enjoy handgun, shotgun and muzzleloader hunting but archery is my favorite.  Second, a Saturday opener for shotgun will take away that last weekend of archery season during the late stages of the rut.   Traditionally I will go down to my friends property to hunt the Saturday and Sunday before shotgun season starts...Then we will all stay down at camp and hunt the first two days of gun season before heading home.

I guess that with a Saturday opener I will just have to take off Thursday and Friday before the gun opener to take advantage of the last two days of archery... :?

I've got mixed feelings. Its been a Monday since as long as I can remember, and I tend to like things to stay the way they are. It would be nice to not have to worry about working on opening day though,  but that could mean more folks out there, and that could mean a better chance that some guy with a brand new rifle will be out there shooting the woods up.

:D Hey all,

The theory is to get more youngsters involved in hunting. If it works out that way, I'm all for it.

I hate to change a tradition, but we need more young blood.

Hey, if we can push opening day back two days a lot of us might not miss the rut, or the end of it weather depending.  I have always been in favor of a longer hunting season - more time in the woods, more bambi to shoot at and eat later, and more fun to have.

Hey, we can all still take that Monday as a holiday..................... Mikey.

I don't like it!  I want to be out of the woods with my deer by opening week-end.  Too many half crazed hunters on week-ends.  It's fine for tree stand hunters & stump sitters, but that's not my style.
