Do I have to put a bell on my .35 remigton brass (using cast
« on: April 23, 2005, 06:18:28 PM »
I did buy a universal M die and I am loading my cast bullets. I have seated these bullets without putting a bell on them and it appears the brass  is not cutting into the bullet. I figure my gas checks must expand the end and the bullet slips in with no damage. Is this ok to do (Not bell) or is there a reason I need to bell the ends.

Thanks

If you aren't shaving lead, I see no "need" to.

I agree with sgtt!
If it's not shaving your bullets, don't worry about belling the mouth!

NOTE: Just to be sure it's not shaving, check up inside your seater die to make sure there's no lead shavings in there!

I just loaded some cast bullets into my 7.5x55 brass using the Lee Universal case expanding die. This is the first time I have used it and while I am sure it works as well as  the M dies do.  I like the Lee setup  as it is good for every cartridge just not for one like the M dies are. I belled the cartridges just enough to seat the bullets and then since this set of dies for the 7.5 Swiss does not have a FCD I set the crimp set up on the bullet seating die just enough to take the bell out with out making a crimp just enough to straighten the case again. It worked very well and I would reccommend one to any one who plans on shooting a lot of cast for different cartridges and does not want to by M dies for each one. Jim
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

I think it will be fine with out the bell with the gas check bullets.

FWIW   My son and I have been loading our 35's without belling the necks for about 10years... we are using cast GC pistol bullets .. unsized..  but our accuracy has been excellent and we have no intentions of changing our procedure...   Marty
