The 204 handi is dialed in, and smok'n the ground hogs!
« on: April 18, 2005, 09:10:07 PM »
Thanks to all the guys who helped me out with this rifle, great advice from you all.  The gun is now shooting awsome, get this, 1/2" with 33gr factory ammo.  A major problem with this gun was the barrel crown, major burrs from the factory, nothing a dremel tool, and a sort carbide stone couldn't handle. Came right in after that.  Great gun with a little work, this gun is a killing machine, 11 ground hogs, 8 crows, and a rabid red fox. None less than 100yds, and one of the ground hogs lasered at 417yds, one shot and it was all over.  Only 1 miss so far, but got it with the follow up shot. Again thanks for all the help, and if anyone needs any advise on making the 204 handi shoot, let me know, I thinks I figured out every trick in the book, and a few I happened to discover for myself.

Congrats!! Is that 33gr a typo, or are you shooting the 33gr HSM ammo??  Mine doesn't shoot that stuff well, 1½" groups is the best it would do, the 32gr Vmax hornady shoots less than 1" groups so far...

Wait a minute are we talking about the Ruger .204, the one that some folks claim is inaccurate?  :?  :-D  :D

It's the 33gr. hsm, my gun hates the hornady 32gr. factory loads, to be honest, my benelli nova 12ga, with buckshot shoots better groups at 100 yds than the hornady 32's, just kidding, but the groups with either the 32gr., or the 40gr. hornady loads are just plain terrible out of my gun. The HSM is great, followed by the winchester 34gr.  The next step for me is to try the 35gr. Berger bullets, I've got 1000 204 brass waiting for reloading, but to be honest, every day I don't have work, I'm out shooting chucks with the remaining factory loads. I told my wife I won't buy anymore factory brass, so in about 10-15 more rounds I'm bound for my reloading room.

Hey PurpleHaze,

Glad you've made a shooter!

Can you give a little more detail about you crown touch up? I've been wrestling with my 22-250 and am considering a touch up to the crown.

What shape stone did you use?

Thanks,

Rick
