25 wssm load data
« on: April 12, 2005, 08:04:17 PM »
I am a new member and I was looking for some load data for 100 gr barnes tsx bullets.  I have tried the 115 gr. with no luck and I am wondering if any would share some info and advice on powder and proper bullet seating depth for the 100 gr. tsx's.
Thanks
rmendoza

My son loaded 42.3 gr. of H4895 for our daughter in-law to use last year during deer season.  Worked great, accurate with complete penetration no signs of excessive pressure although it is a bit over the max. level(51.5 grains) in the Hodgdon manual.  Right now I am working on loads using RE22 and getting some excellent results.  As for the 115 gr. TSX, I believe you tried it on deer with less than desirable results.  If that is the case then you’ll be happy with the 100 gr. version.  Lawdog

P.S. - As a safety reminder, any load you get that didn’t come from a manual PLEASE start under the stated powder charge by about 10% just to be safe.  Then work up slowly.  This is what I do.

Lawdog,
Thanks for the information, I will give them a try with H4895 powder. As far as seating depth goes, Barnes recommends seating them .050 off the lands. I am not sure how to measure the throat of my rifle as I haven't been reloading for that long. I know that the overall cartridge length for the 25 wssm is 2.36". I don't know what rifle your daughter-in-law has but I have the Browning A-bolt. Since the A-bolt has a removable magazine I am limited to how far out I can seat the bullets. I guess I will have to play around with them to find out what shoots best in my rifle. As far as the 115 tsx's goes I never got to try them out on game. I burned up all 50 on trying to find a accurate load. Thanks again for you input it was much appreciated.

Try 36.0 gr. of H4895 behind those 115 gr. TSX's and see if that helps.  Work up and down a 1/10 of a grain at a time until you find the accuracy you are looking for.  As far as seating depth goes make a "dummy" round with the bullet seated(snugly but not tight so the pressure of closing the bolt will shove the bullet back into the case) out until it touches the lands.  Set the seating back .50" and see if it will work through your magazine.  Both my daughter in-law and I have M70 Coyotes in .25 WSSM.  If I or my son can be of any help just PM me and we will try our best to get/give you an answer.  Let me know how things work for you.  Lawdog

Handloader Magazine, October 2004, had an interesting article on the 25 WSSM, and gave some loads.  I loaded some sing this and got good results.  I loaded 100 Horandady SP Interlock using 45 grains of IMR-4350.  Got under 1MOA with this load, and took several deer with it.  Very accurate out of my Browning A-Bolt.

For the 115 Barnes X-Bullet, it shows four loads:

Big Game          41 grains         2767 fps                     2.60 Group @ 100

Hunter              44 Grains         2748 fps

Roberto,

Are you going to be hunting Cow mountain, Elk Mountain areas?  Maybe the Mountains East of Ukiah over by Booneville?  Those 100 gr. TSX's have worked well on Wild Hogs around there so let me know how they work for you.  Lawdog

Lawdog,
I hunt over in Boonville. A friend of mine owns a few hundred acres that I have been fortunate to hunt on.  The deer hunting is excellent with some good genetics in the area. There is usually a fair amount of hogs that go through the property but the last couple of years the have been thin. I can't wait to run into a few of them and try those tsx out on them.

Roberto,

If you get the chance try the Black Oak area on the southern side of Little Cow Mountain.  Lots of nice Blacktail bucks, Turkey's and Wild Boar.  Last fall we sat and watched a sow Black Bear and her 3 cubs play around at the foot of the glade.  You might also try the Fox Hollow area just south of the Black Oaks for Hogs.  Stream at the bottom runs year around even during the dry years.  Sweet, cold water too.  A great place to fill your canteen, take a nap or have a bite of lunch when hunting.  Lawdog
