My homemade hunting knife
« on: April 23, 2005, 10:33:17 AM »
I made my own hunting knife from a piece of tool steel. The steel that I used was from a saw blade that was used to cut 1 foot thick by 4 foot wide steel slabs. It's really some hard steel and took a good while to get it sharp after I got it into the shape I want. It has a 4 inch blade, handles made from a 7 point I took in Sumter county, Alabama a few years back. I like my homemade hunting knife. Here's some pics of the finished knife.

BTW, this is the first knife I ever made. I got a few pointers from someone on how to grind it down without losing the temper in the steel and how to attach the handles with some brass rod, other than that, I figure it turned out good for my first knife. One thing's for sure, it's the sharpest knife I ever owned.

Nice start for a first. Looks alot better than the first one I made. My first was made from a file and at the time I knew nothing of drawing or tempering ,so needless to say, it broke :x

I had thought about making one from a file, but one of my co-workers said it would be very hard and brittle, so I didn't try that. I'm trying to get some more of the old saw blade metal so I can make another one. That metal is carbon tool steel. the pictures I added, the metal looks stainless, but that was from the polishing that I did on it. I think my next knife will turn out better as I had a learning experience on the first one.

What type of saw blade?   The more you do the better you get. Every time you finish a knife you always see something you wish you had did a little different.

The metal was from an old saw blade that was used to cut 1 foot thick by 4 wide steel slabs. A coworker salvaged it at work when it was replaced by a new one.
