What rifle feature do you find most important to you?

Granted, some features may be inter-related. As such, although you can only pick 1 feature on the poll, you can list however many features you consider important - in order of importance.

Zachary,
on the poll i clicked weight but not for the reason that most do. I need a weapon heavy enough to counter recoil. My two hunting weapons both weigh 10 pounds - empty. The recoil of the 3006 with 165s is as much as I wish to be abused with and my .358 Win. uses 158 grain pistol bullets (sub caliber groups) and 180 grain bullets at 2500+ fps and the recoil feels comparable to the 3006.

I totally agree with you. :wink:

I don't do much hunting that involves a great deal of walking.  As such, a light weight rifles is of no concern to me.

In fact, I strongly prefer heavier rifles, not only for recoil purposes, but also because I seem to shoot them better.

To me the first thing I look at in any firearm is the company behind the weapon.  The poll didn't have "Customer Service" so my choice was brand name.  With the cost of firearms today a person has the right to expect a rifle to be safe, accurate to a certain degree, reliable and if the rifle doesn't meet these requirements then the company should stand behind their product without reservation.  Sorry to say that doesn't always happen today.  Lawdog

I'll be the first to admit that I'm not a professional pollster. :oops:

Yea, I agree with all of you about the choices.  That's why I prefaced the poll with my first post - that being that it is essentially not a great poll, but that, as an option, you can all post your comments and suggestions.  Either way, whether by poll or post, we all get to understand what "feature" is most important to us.

There is a little of something that I agree with all of you.  Yes accuracy is very important.  How I didn't think of that before I'm not quite sure :oops: Perhaps beacause I was initially thinking about features in buying NIB rifles.  Then again, there are many people that purchase used rifles and, as such, can probably have some sort of recorded history as to how the rifle can shoot.

Again, sorry about the poll choices, but let's keep this post going - I'm very interested in what you all consider to be important "features," and I'm sure you guys are probably just as interested as well.  As such, don't be so concerned with the actual poll - it's probably you posting your explanation that is more informative - and helpful. :grin:

PERFORMANCE

There are a lot of very fine rifles out there, but you're not going to talk me out of my old reliable. It has taken game in every kind of situation I have demanded of it. Whenever the meat pole is empty, it's not my rifle's fault. I KNOW it is going to do the job if I do mine, plain and simple. I honestly wouldn't trade that for all the slick and shine in the world. :wink:

Size & Fit!!  Followed by accuracy and reliability.  I'm kinda tall and lanky and really like a  l-o-n-g length of pull.  Holding my old .25-06, an 03/A3 on a Fajen stock, is like holding an old girl friend.  (Don't tell my wife I used that comparison!)

I selected weight, but in my last rifle purchase it was actually secondary to action type.  I KNEW it was going to be a bolt action, so that wasn't even an issue.  

Next on my list (since I had just gotten rid of a 9.5lb 300WinMag) was a light weight gun.  It had to be less than 7lbs.  

After that came size/fit.  I handled a bunch of guns and found what felt the best to me.  

Next was caliber ... I had chosen the 7mm-08 after much deliberation.   (280 and 25-06 were the other prime candidates, but I opted for the short action)

Next I decided that if the way the company got light weight was by chopping 4-6" of barrel off, I wasn't interested.  I really wanted a 22" barrel to take advantage of as much of the 7-08's capabilities as possible.  This may have been a carryover from "magnumitis", trying to get every last fps out of this compact cartridge.

Last on my list was pure esthetics and getting something different than what everyone else has.  I ended up picking the Rem 700 Mountain Rifle in stainless/laminated and am perfectly happy with the results ....  6.5lbs, nice trim stock, 7mm-08, 22" barrel .. and it shoots sub-MOA with factory ammo to boot!!

:D  Let me reapproach this question.I have to be realistic,of the choices I think I would select "price" first (how much can I afford to spend).Then "Type of action".This would influence the "Brand".Then "Type of barrel" as next and then "Barrel length".I would then choose "Overall size and fit".The " type of stock" I would choose last. I am purchasing a new gun this way.If I were buying a used gun I would choose differently.I would select Price,Type action,Barrel rifling condition,Brand,Type barrel,barrel length,overall size and fit,and last the Type of stock.Just me and my way,I am CAL...

I'm not the best candidate for this poll,because I have 20 longarms,and they vary quite a lot.
I'll assume that you are talking about Hunting. I have three;a bolt gun,a lever gun and a single shot.
I use them becaue of their size and fit.

Well, for what it is worth, we have a great variety of action styles and just about every style is chambered for an acceptable performing cartridge for whatever class of game you are after.  Granted, specialized rifles, like those for elephant hunting or 1,000 yard target matches have requirements that the deer - elk - moose - caribou - hog shooter doesn't really have to concern themselves with.  Is controlled round feeding necessary for deer/pronghorn hunter?  Is bench target accuracy necessary for a deer hunter shooting the majority of shots less than 100 yds?

The number one concern is what, where and how the rifle is going to be used.  I mean a rifle that is specialized for stopping cape buffalo might have features that aren't very desireable for someone wanting a rifle shooting p-dogs.  An ultra light sheep rifle, may not be the ticket for a beanfield stand hunters rifle.  All of our options are part of the unique reason we buy the rifle.

Personally, if I'm looking for a rifle, I find one that has whatever combination of attributes are necessary for the rifle to perform the most effectively.  That varies on its purpose.  Usually there are still quite a few different brands and styles that fit the purpose, so I find the one that fits me the best, is the best balanced, and one that I like the feel of the best.  That's the reason I picked the fit option.

I haven't seen the Remington poll, but I'll take off this poll off of the "sticky" format and let it slide down with the rest of the polls as time progresses.  In this manner, if anyone would like to participate, then they will be free to do so.
