Savage 24 in 223/12ga for predator calling
« on: March 14, 2005, 02:04:27 PM »
Greetings to all, I am new to this forum but not to the shooting sports.  I am hoping to starting predator calling next season and have a question on the Savage 223/12ga.  On the surface it would seem an awesome truck and calling gun but I wonder how they work in real life and if it is something worth serious consideration of not.

The reason I ask is I have a Savage 24 in 22lr/20 that I use as my early season squirrel gun.  It works well on squirrels out to 'bout 35yds with the right load and it is nice to have the shotgun for the occasional flushed rabbit and pheasant.  I keep some 3"buckshot on hand for the occasional coyote that will sometimes show up for the squirrel distress call but so far have not got a shot off on one yet.  My complaints against the gun are the rifle is not that accurate and the point of impact between the barrels is off enough the shotgun requires some Kentucky windage.  This has me leary of the 223 accuracy.  If I had the 223 I would also like to use it as a crow and groundhog/ground squirrel gun and those would require some reasonable accuracy.

Can any of you comment on this gun or any other Savage 24?  Could I expect it to shoot "minute of fox out to 150yds or so?  Any advise or comments will be appreciated.

Howdy Beavis.  I have an older model 24 in 223 over 20 guage.  It is a reasonably new acquisition for me, therefore I cannot say too much about its hunting performance.  I purchased it for use on coyotes when I return to southern Canada.  Right now the only predators I can hunt are wolves, and I would rather use my swede mauser than the 223.

As for accuracy, savage has a very good reputation for accuracy in their barrels.  My 24V was originally chambered for 222, and was changed along the way before I received it.  I mounted pivot rings on it, so that I could flip the scope to the right and use the iron sights.  I have spent hours with it at the range and am very impressed with its performance.

The past two range sessions with this combo were fantastic.  I shot 75 rounds with the trap club with very good results.  I kept up with the folks with the custom over under 12 guages, and with the scope off to the side it was very effective.  Off to the rifle range the next day.  I kid you not, at 25 yrds, the three shots I took looked like one oblong hole.  100 yards was the same thing (I was using sandbags), a little more like a shamrock, however all at the same hole.  200 yards my group was around an inch and a half, however, I would blame that on me, and not the gun.  Currently I own 5 savage 24 combinations, and the three I regularly shoot fire exceptionally accurately (rimfires, I only shoot at 25-30 yds).

Some people do not like the plastic stock, or the weight of the new 24F model.  I think the weight makes it a little easier to shoot accurately; just a little more pain on the shoulder carrying it in the field all day.

Hope this helps.  Try your posting in the drilling/combo gun section.  Wink man is very knowledgeable on the model 24 and lurks there often.  Good luck in your decision.

thank you yellowknifedave for the response and insight.  I did post a very similar post on the combo forum in reference to the 17HMR/12ga and the wink-man came through very well.

I realize these guns are a compromise but I just love 'em.  I would like to find out as much as I can about them and their performance and if you do use yours for any future predator calling I would love to hear how it worked in real life.  I consider my 22/20ga a bust on the range but the ultimate squirrel gun and a decent rabbit gun in the field.   It does get heavy to carry in a rabbit field but in the woods I have it set to the shotgun as I'm heading to a squirrel stand and if I flush something and have to shoot on the run.  Once I get to a stand I mount it on shooting sticks and set it to 22 and go for the head shots.  Seems like a predator calling situation should be very similar.

I have a 24 in 223/12 ga.......The 223 is very accurate ...I haven't shot anything other than buckshot thru the 12 ga.....(coyote calling) The shotgun barrel is rough and has tooling marks.....The gun is heavy to carry but works out well in the stand or as a truck gun.....
