Blackhawk Misfire HELP
« on: May 08, 2005, 09:25:30 AM »
Went out shooting today and got 4 rds out of my 45colt and had a misfire.I rotated the cylinder to see what was the problem and found that the fire pin had hit the rim and not the primer???.So I removed that rd and loaded 5 more. Had the same thing happen a few more times!!!!????.Anyone have any Ideas. I just had a new hand put to it about 75 rds ago. Does it need a new fire pin?. Thanks

Sounds like a timing issue to me.

the only way i can figure that could happen is if the piece that locks into the notch in the cylinder isnt locking in.

1.  ensure the gun is empty.
2.  double check that the gun is empty.
3.  pull the hammer back all the way as if you were going to fire it.
4.  try to turn the cylinder either way with your hand.  try several times.

my dad has a colt replica that would do this.   i took it all apart and tried to fix it but i think a part was broken.  since i didnt have another gun to compare to, i took it to the smith.

probably the best thing to do.   bottom line is it could be any of several different problems.    might as well get it fixed right.

As stated, you have a timing problem.  While unloaded, slowly cock the hammer just until it "clicks in" and stays in the cocked position. Note the position of the cylinder, then pull the hammer back fully, until it stops.  Bet 'cha money the cylinder will rotate until it is indexed correctly.  A dangerous situation.  Send it back to Ruger and they will fix it for free.

Unfortunately, this is more common on Ruger SA than we think. I had seen this on several Rugers we tested, couple chambers at least. When shooting Ruger SA, make sure that you pull hammer ALL THE WAY BACK, until hits grip frame.

If you have a chance, try Freedom Arms, you will see what is proper timing. I had chance to get a good deal on one; field grade, 7.5” barrel, 454 and 45 LC cylinders, premier grips and scope, and was stupid enough to let it go. What a mistake...

DONT TRY TO SHOOT THIS GUN AGAIN UNTIL ITS REPAIRED!!! If that thing goes off without the cyl aligned with the barrel some nasty things are going to happen. Send it to ruger and have them repair it.

Interesting. Reminds me of something. I bought one of the very first .45 Colt Blackhawks lo, these many years ago. It did the same thing at about 100 rounds, pin strike in the middle of the rim. I was too dumb to be concerned. Around 3000 rounds since, shooting a few times a year, not a single problem.
