One more 7-30 Waters question.
« on: April 24, 2005, 06:52:32 AM »
Hi Folks, After getting my 7-30 headspace problem under control (With alot of help from you folks) I have it printing pretty good on paper. 2.25" groups at 100 yards. My question is this: The group is only 3/8" wide  Most of the group is vertical   What can I do to improve vertical stringing??Thanks, George..........................................from Masonville.

You could try free floating the forend with some washers.

do what tad suggests :agree:  use some small stainless washers to float the forend.
also look into how you are resting your rear grip, or try to have a more consistent trigger pull and hold. if the rear grip is snagging the rear rest under recoil, i'm a thinkin this can cause your problem.
a lot of shooting practice will help. sounds like your load may be close enuff to shoot better than that already.

hope this helps, and it sure won't hurt to try.

The suggestion of free floating the handguard is very good. I have done this and improved my groups in both my contenders. I have also found that if the cases are not sized correctly that it will cause vertical stringing. This is caused by the cases/overall length being to long and causing inconsistent lock up of the action.

I believe that the preasure of your grip and any down preasure that you put on your rest will affect the verticle shot placement. JMHO

Before you go messing with the gun which seems to be shooting pretty accurately based on the horizontal dispersion why not discuss with us the set up you are using to shoot. With Contenders and Encores many times vertical dispersion is a result of the shooting set up being used not the gun or load.

HMMM! Old G.B. may be right on this . I noticed that MY groups opened vertically when I rested the grip on sand bags. They came back to normal when I rested my wrists on the bags. The fore arm was on a sand bag in both cases. The gun seemed to "bounce" more when the grip sat on the bags.I tried it with a bipod attached and got similar but smaller "bounces"

I had the same problem, but cured it by putting the front sand bag as far back as I could against the trigger guard and resting my wrists on the rear bag.  The same trick also worked on my NEF rifle which has the same type of breakdown action.
