Anyone ever try Barnes bullets in 243?
« on: April 27, 2005, 07:01:19 PM »
I am getting a 243 barrel soon and wondering about the Barnes 85 gr BT Tripple Shock in the Handi.

Looks to me like the perfect bullet for the 243 Handi.  The right weight for the twist, solid design to offer great penetration.  Not something you'd have to shy away from a shoulder shot like the Sierra 85gr BTHP.

Anyone use it?

I looked at a box of them today at the gunshop and wondered about them too.. but...I picked up a box of Winchester Supreme Factory 55gr varmint loads instead...since I had already bought a try box of 95grain CT Ballistic tips last week...Both have the Lubalux coating...and should do well for their intended purposes...but the XXX's do look pretty good too...so I'll wind up with a box of them to try a little later...and do so load work ups...

Handirifle.
If these bullets are anywhere near halve as good as the the 100gr TSX 25 cal they be great. They don't mind high speed. I used them on deer last fall and they worked perfect. They smash through bones and never break up. The only way to recover a bullet you have to shoot them end for end on deer. I tried that but I never had any deer to cooperate.

I bought a good supply of them and use them in three 25 cal rifles. My friend is using them in his 7mmRem Mag and they are something else in that rifle.

Fred,
I have heard a lot of good about the triple shock.  Got rid of a lot of the problems of the original Barnes.  High pressure, heavy copper deposits etc.

I am hoping these work out well in the 243.  Looking for a "any angle" (except texas heart shot) deer bullet and one that is black bear capable if the right shot presents itself.

Has anyone every used a partition type of bullet in 243 on black bear?

You can kill Black Bear with just about any rifle and bullet as long as the bullet stays together.

My old long gone friend used to shoot them with his .22 Ruger target pistol. Or any other gun that was handy. 32 Special, 30-30, 44-40, 303, 22Highpower he even killed one with an old 57 Snyder. His brother figured the 22Hornet was the best bear medicine. You figure that one.

He had a farm in the woods polluted with Black Bears could not keep them out of the vegie garden.

You are loaded for bear with a 243 partition.

I bought a box of 85 grain XLC's but have not tried them yet. I will report on them when I get a chance to try them. Right now I have some 95 grain Nosler Ballistic tips and 85 grain BTHP Sierra Gamekings loaded up waiting for a decent range day.
shot placement is everything.

I have not used barnes in handi rifles , but this is the only bullet I use in my .270 abolt. I use the federal loaded XLC bullets and they are devastating on deer. I only shoot em straight in the shoulder so these work good. There was one deer I shot quartering away and i hit him low in the neck. He ran about 40 yds and fell dead. The thing ive noticed about the barnes x and deer is that they dont leave much of an entrance of exit for some reason. But damn does it tear em up inside.

Lots of good feedback, thanks.  James will be waiting to hear the report.  This IS a Handi you're talking about, I assume?
