problem w/ a scope
« on: April 22, 2005, 02:05:10 PM »
I have a .17 HMR, Remington 597 w/ a Tasco 6x24 scope mounted on it.  I have shot it before and was sighted in at 50 yds, w/ a nice tight group.  I have not used this gun for a while, and took it out to the range to plink a bit.  I was hitting 2' low and to the right about 8".  I have no idea what happened.  I tried turning the adjustment knob up, but it went all the way, and I am still over a foot low.  What happened?  It was in my gun safe, so it did not get banged or dropped.  I am shooting the .17 HMR by Hornady.  This is driving me nuts.   Any suggestions?  Should I try a shim or 2?

I would check to see if the scope or the scope base is moving around. That would throw you off that far.

If the mountings are good and tight then suspect the scope its self.  I have had some troubles with the new crop of Tasco scopes, to the point where I am not using them any longer.  While I had and continue to have great success with the Japanese Tascos the ones made in China have had some quality problems.

Good luck.  This can be frustrating.

.........check the stock screws and make sure the stock hasn't warped aganist the barrel anywhere......if the stock is ok then you might try Burris Signature rings with the inserts and get the extra offset inserts and they will let you adjust the point of impact to center in most cases......but the later Tasco's are known to give more problems than the early ones.......good luck and good shooting!!

Thanks for the replies.  I had it collimated, and then checked the zero.  It seems to be ok, now,but for how long?   Thanks again.
