need advice for the 7mm STW
« on: May 01, 2005, 06:35:51 PM »
I just purchased a 2 yr old but unused Rem 700 BDL SS in 7mm STW. I was pleasantly surprised as it shot a 0.77" group out of the box with 150gr factory winchester ammo. It has a 26" bbl with a factory Mbrake. The gunshop said it was a banquet gun.

This must have been a special order because it has a nice adj trigger, bedding blocks, chrome bore, and free floated. The SS receiver is also engraved...(?)...also has an R3 recoil pad at the butt.

I ordered a set of RCBS dies....do I resize 8MM Mag brass? Just buy 7mm STW brass? Any help will be appreciated....I plan on using this mainly for western hunting...Antelope, Muley, Elk. I put a Zeiss 3X9X42 on it.

Thanks a lot! :D

Try IMR 7828 and stay with a premium bullet. Start loading at recommended minimum loads and work up slowly. Pressure spikes quickly in the STW.

If you resize 8mm mag brass watch your case neck thickness as this can increase pressures as well.

Is there an advantage in resizing 8MM brass?  :?
I was probably going to order some 7mm STW Remington brass. I do have about 50 once fired factory brass from a different (SAKO) STW I had a couple years back.

When I first got a 7 STW I couldn't find find any 8 Mag brass and factory ammo was not widely available and very expensive, if you could even find it.  I ordered 100 W-W 300 H&H cases and necked them down so they'd just barely fit into my rifle's chamber.  I then loaded a starting 7 STW charge and they fire-formed beautifully.  That was over 10 years ago and I still use those cases.
