I was up in Klickitat, hunt on a farm that we got permission to hunt on about 10yrs ago...Jack and I have scouted the area east of Washougal for turkeys, have talked to lots of people who have seen them, but most don't want anyone hunting on their property, so the easterns are hard to get. Easterns are planted on the west side, Merriams in Skamania, Klickitat and a bunch up north of Spokane, Rios are around Walla Walla and a couple other smaller areas. I'd like to get a Washington Slam, but finding an Eastern can be real tough!!

Thanks everyone!

Way to go quickd!!!
Thats a really nice bird!
Its great that you can hunt three species of turkeys in one state...all we have here is the eastern....cant complain though numbers are on a slow incline.

Thanks everyone!!

Jerry, nothing against the H&R shotgun, I have 2, but there are too many cougars in the areas I hunt to be out there making the sounds of one of their favorite prey foods to be holding a single shot firearm whilst doing it!!! That's the primary reason I bought the 835, it certainly has no advantages other than firepower over a single, it's all the things an H&R isn't....primarily HEAVY and somewhat cumbersome!!!! I'm not a handgunner so that option is out....not sure if it's legal to carry a handgun while turkey hunting here, either, because they can only be taken with shotgun or bow.

Wow, mu hats off to you Quick.  I've been trying for about 10 seasons now to bag a Mountian Merriams and have had no luck so far.

I think our local lions and coyotes keep the population in check :(

My resident turkey hunter and photographer went out this morning despite an overcast gusty day.  She's been experimenting with making her own strikers our of cured red cedar for a slate an old veteran turkey hunting friend gave her and was trying one out when she saw this one at 13 steps as he was quietly slipping up on poor unsuspecting "Gertrude" (good a name as  any for a decoy). Hard part was getting the gun up and the safety off but the wind helped some with that. The rest  is history 12.5" beard and 1" spurs.  Here tis:

Tomorrow's the last day of the season here, but this is her first year to hunt and her first turkey.  Somebody up there must think well of her.

I'll pass the congrats on, quick.  We like to stalk the wild edible fungi too, but not many morels hereabouts.  Actually we've had  paucity of edible mushrooms this year, so color us green.  I know you'll enjoy them.  She lived in Oregon before we married, and tells me folks up there get down right dangerous in competing for those tasty morsels.

Tim,
Thanks for the memory. I was raised on a dairy farm (Where I started shooting H&R Toppers) between Everett and Mt Vernon, and we had them all over the place every spring. Haven't tasted one since 1964. I guess I need to make a spring visit back to Puget Sound.
