30-30 bullets and load info?
« on: May 01, 2005, 03:07:07 PM »
Hi Guys, well the time has come, I want to load for my 30-30 barrel and just coincidentally I was talking with my wife and she is interested in trying the 30-30 with reduced loads!!! Any info on bullets and weights which have proven good in the past as accurate and inexpensive would be greatly appreciated. No expensive speciality bullets for serious shooting or dangerous game needed. Just some run of the mill accurate Hornady, Sierra or whatever brand bullets for the 30-30 in a mild to mid range loading would be nice, also if they can be loaded up to a good whitetail loading would be a great bonus...we are planning a little trip to Maine in a short time so I can stop by the Kittery Trading Post and pick up what I need as I pass by...Thanks....<><....

I ordered a box of the 150gr Federal Fusion loads to try out, if they shoot half as good as the 150gr 30-06 loads in Mac's UltraComp, I'll be real happy, even though I have an RCBS die set to work with! The 150gr and 170gr 30-30 loads are $13 a box at www.wholesalehunter.com

Hodgdon has youth loads listed on the net you can try - or just use starting loads.

MSP,

Here's a group I shot the other day with the .30-30 barrel I got from JPH45.

It was shot with surplus IMR 4895, but I don't think it can be duplicated with a cannister powder available to the handloader.

This is a thread I have going on another forum where I'm using some Lyman 311291 cast bullets and playing around with some Blue Dot reduced loads.

I don't know what you consider expensive but in the Contenders even at lower velocity the 125 grain Nosler Ballistic tip shoots well and performs well on deer size critters. I still need to get a 30-30 barrel for one of my Handi's. Thats the next thing on my list. Then a rifled slug barrel for those Dixie Slugs.
shot placement is everything.

MSP:
This is the load I've been using in my model 158:
Remington case
Federal 210 primer
30.5 grains  IMR 3031
150grain Nosler Ballistic Tip

I've been getting 2200 FPS through the chronograph good accuracy and very little recoil.  Great for paper shooting or could be used on deer or bears too. Check it out, I think you'll like it.
