Cutting and threading
« on: May 14, 2005, 01:03:52 PM »
Hi all,

There was an article/link that somebody had posted awhile back about a machinist who had cut the barrel on an NEF back to ahead of the chamber to use as a threaded receiver on a conventional (or not so conventional) barrel install.

Can anybody remember where that was or know where I could read about a similar procedure?

Thanks much,

Dean

If it's the machinist I think you mean...he isn't allowed on this site...but here's the last thread some of our guys had on the subject.....http://www.graybeardoutdoors.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=62083

There was a link to an article that I think he wrote, with a lot of photos of his procedure for building up his custom rifle.  -It seems like his caliber choice was an obscure 30 which was comparable to a 30-30.  He had gone to great lengths to cut the back end off of another bbl and thread his bbl into it like a regular receiver.

I'd like to do that and build a 25-20 but I can't remember what caliber (or gauge) bbl he started with.

Any tips might help.

Thanks again

I just checked my e-mail and found my private messages.

Thanks very much to all of you who responded!!

I will keep everyone here informed on my progress.  I've started to build a "modest schuetzen rifle".  Those of you who get the Single Shot Rifle Journal will know what I mean.

It will be a breech-seater chambered in 32-40 or 25-20 (I haven't decided yet).  I'm excited to start using my new lathe and shaper!!

I've finally build a side mount breech seater tool for my 357 handi.  I'll try to keep everybody posted on how well that is working.  This tool allows a shooter to seat the cast-lead bullet into the rifling just ahead of the chamber.  This method delivers superior performance with the lead bullets I like to use.  It is a traditional target shooters method going back to the 1880's.  Don't do it unless you know what you're doing, and if you don't know, ASK.

Take care and thanks again,

Dean
