Savage Mark II,extraction problems and accuracy
« on: March 17, 2005, 01:38:15 AM »
I am considering a Savage Mark II LH rifle but have seen a few posts about extraction problems. Is this going to be a problem?

I've also heard inconsistant  reports on accuracy. A Marlin 781 I used to have was very accurate, so I assume the Savage would be too.

ba_50,  I have two of these, and have not had a problem with extraction.  As far as accuracy is concerned, that can be very subjective.  What are your expectations?  First you have to define what is the accuracy level you are expecting/need.  Accuracy to me, for a .22, is 3/8" (5 shot group) at 50 yards.  But my needs are probably not the same as yours.  Most .22s under $200.00 will usually print under 2 inches at 50 yards.  This is usually exceptable for hunting needs, but not for any type of target competition.  If you're looking for an inexpensive .22 that will print 3/8 to 3/4 inch groups at 50 yards, then I would suggest you try to find a Norinco JW-15.  This is a Chinese BRNO copy.  These usually sell for around $100.00, if you can find one.  Next up is the CZ 452, but these have gone up recently to about $300.00.  The 452 is the same action as the Norinco, only made in the old Czechoslovia.  Both guns are capable of printing groups around 1 inch at 100 yards, with the ammo it likes.  Hope this helps.

If I could get that kind of accuracy it would be great. Even 1" @ 50 yards is good enough for position shooting practice. It's just that I have seen posts lately that some are having extraction problems. I've thought about the long stocked 10/22, but figure it will take up to $350 to get a decent shooter. The CZ 452 would be ok if they would put the safety in right.

I can't see why we have to pay large bore prices for rimfires. M39 & 94/22 etc.

I recently traded my mkll for a stainless 10/22 for no good reason other than to get a new gun with no expense. I loved the accuracy of mine, was laminated stock version and consistantly shot nickels at 50 yrd. nearly broke me. anyway the extraction problem is minimized by keeping the chamber area and bolt clean, I think the real problem is the spring that holds the extractor, and it helps to remove it and clean its channel fairly regularly. If you get one anything like the one I had I think you'll love it.

Another accurate gun for a cheap price is the Romanian 69 Trainers mine will shoot under a half a inch at 50 yards 5 shot groups.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

Yes, there is an extraction problem on some Savage .22's. I called Savage they sent me a new extractor and spring and solved the problem. They know there is an issue but the new parts fixed it.

I'm having extractor problems with my MK2. How do I go about ordering a new extractor and spring? A phone number e-mail address would be a great help. Thanks.
