Contender open sight options?
« on: March 27, 2005, 03:01:14 PM »
Handguns with "open metallic sights only" are allowed for turkey hunting here in Bama. I have never owned a contender but the need to extend my range a little (not a world class turkey guide am I) has got me to wondering what is possible with iron sights and a 223 contender. I am not new to handgun hunting but it has all been done with red dotted revolvers.
Being unfamiliar with TC's, I also don't know about after market sights that might be more precise than standard OEM stuff. I'm not in the need for quick, fast acquisition type sights. I need more of a precision arrangement. I need to hit a target the size of a softball as far out as I can reliably hit said target in field conditions. I would think 80yds. or so would not be undoable? For all I know the OEM sights are fine for this but that's why I'm asking. Thanks for your help guys.

You specified open sights but if that means metallic sights, Williams makes a really good receiver type sight with changeable apatures that goes real good on a TC barrel.  If you can shoot that 223 with a taco hold it even works better.

They are available on the internet at midwayusa.com and natchezss.com for a little more than a $50.00 bill.

You can only hit the target if the barrel is pointed in the right direction when the bullet leaves the barrel.

The man you need to talk to is Ken Light. Go here:

and see what he's got. I have a couple of his full length rail sights on TC barrels and under good conditions it's no big trick to shoot pop cans at 100 yards with either. Still haven't shot a 40 in standing yet, though! I think that has more to do with the operator than the equipment.

The stock sights from TC should be more than adequate for your purpose.  Any Turkey I could see (that may of course be an issue with bare eyes) within 200 yards would have reason to worry.

Accuracy is the name of the game and repeatability, sight picture, etc then Ken Lights are the way to go.  Yeah they cost as much as a used barrel but there is a reason.  Silhouetters use them almost exclusively on every rig I have ever seen.  In fact I have a 7 TCU with them on it, dies, brass etc for 225, 14" barrel in good condition, plus at least 100 rounds of bullets.  I have 300 rounds of loaded ammo, but they like to charge an arm and a leg to ship that stuff.

Spoken like a true target shooter ;~)

In the field if you can't get em with the stock TC sights you wouldn't get with Bomars either.  Bomars are great on a range with good light but the tight sight picture works against you in most field conditions, too much of a good thing.

I would like to do the Williams but I would also like to change the front to a bead. What will fit in the barrels front sight?
