Something Odd?

Okiee.....it was our opener today.  My buddy and I had a couple gobblers singing to us, but unfortunately we think they hooked up with a flock of hens before they got to us and shut down.  But we had something odd happen as we hit the truck and bummed around the back roads looking for some action.  We hit a dirt road that goes to a small shooting pit on the far side of the farm we were hunting.  On the way in we saw a hen on the front lawn of a small house out near there.  OK, pretty neat but not what we want, so we continue on.  We drive in, crow call and chirp but no responses.  So we are heading back down the road when we hit the backside of the small house and find three jakes fedding back there!!!!!  My buddy and I are still looking for our first birds so we decide to give it a go.  Without revealing ourselves we back the truck up and sneak to a point where we can see through holes in thtree cover.  My buddy gives some chirps and......nothing.  They dont even LOOK our way let alone vocalize (not that I expected them to gobble anyways, but I expectd SOME reaction.)  Even the crow call dont produce anything.  So me and my buddy decide to maximze our efforts and we both hit different sides of the road with my buddy close to the field and me about 50 yards further back in the woods.  My buddy eventually comes up and tells me they eventually went into the woods not to be seen (or heard from) again.  All while the hen was up in the top of the field.  Is this odd, cuz it seemed so to me.  No reaction to calling and no interest in the hen up above.  Im thinking mybe they were subordinate jakes whos boss might have gotten shot over the weekend (youth season.)  I just dont get it?

Either that or them jakes just aren't right if ya get where I'm goin wit dat... :)  :D

Don't spend so much time reading into turkey behavior.  Lots of times there simply is no explanation for why they do what they do.

You got that right!!! I was all set up at about 10 this am, usually sit for 45 minutes to an hour, making yelps every 5-10 mintues or so, hadn't made a call for a few minutes and I hear yelping about 100yds away or so, I think to myself another hunter is moving in on me at first....then it gets closer, so I yelp back just for fun,  he/it replies....after another few minutes, here comes a hen right to me, walks to within 10 ft of me and we make eye to eye contact, she starts alarm putting does and about face and walks off putting for 20yds or so, quits putting and feeds off in the direction she came from!!! Ya just never know!!! :eek:

EDIT: Forgot to mention that when we were driving down off the mountain, we saw a hen turkey just crossing the road in front of us, got up even with her and she was with a couple more hens, a jake and longbeard......and a peacock!!!! Guess he liked their company!!

Hmmmm....I wonder what peacock tastes like  :twisted:  :-D .

Fly tying material...hey that might sell big ya kno :)  :-D .

Imagine the fan mount on that. Friend comes over, "Wow that is one impressive fan, how big was that gobbler?"

Have you ever seen, heard, or read anything about a closed season on peacocks?
Lacking anything to the contrary  there then must be a full time open season on peacocks.
Therefore, logic alone tells you that you may take as many as you like.
( However, you may have to deal with a very angry housewife with a broom.)  I would persoally rather deal with the government.  (I can't believe I said that!)

Domestic animals are protected here, I believe.....except for feral pigs! Shooting them can result in the loss of license privleges forever! :eek:
