Can ya hear me now?

I just received my mannlicher stock that was ordered on the 26th. of April.

It came with a "stock / barrel band". You didn't mention this little jewel in a prior discussion. What's your thoughts on this?

IMO the gun presents it's self better without that band. Does it affect accuracy in any way?  Is it needed?

I do realize I will need to fire the gun (It's on my 45-70) to see if there is any change in impact with the new stock installed, but this little band has suddenly become a concern, and I'm not sure why?

Any thoughts you might care to share would be appreciated.

What are your concerns about the barrel band? I have a mannlicher forearm and I use the barrel band. The screw that holds the forearm on is so far to the rear it would be possible to actually break the forearm off since it would act like a long lever if you lifted or pulled it away from the barrel from the leading edge, the part nearest the muzzle....Mine works great. You don't have to use it if you are careful, and if you don't use a sling unless the barrel band is on....<><....

Yup, I'm here!!! I thought I said it came with the plastic barrel band with set screw, sorry if I failed to mention it....I don't use it on mine because it won't fit over the Williams Firesight and since I use the frame on different barrels, I didn't want to have to remove the front sight to remove the band. Mine shoots fine without the band, I seldom use a sling, they are cumbersome in the brush and don't help mount the rifle quickly if it's slung over your shoulder, so my sling stays in my day pack 99% of the time! I did place a 1½"x1"piece of refrigerator magnet material in the barrel channel 4" from the muzzle for a pressure point since my mannlicher forend's barrel channel is off center. I sanded a bit on the right side of the channel and then installed the pressure pad to center the forend on the barrel. It shoots 1½-2" groups at 100yds with the the Williams WGRS peep sight.

Tim, I think I will have to try it both ways. My "major concern", if such can be said, is the harmonics of the barrel in all that wood. It could be good for accuracy....if it's in the right place, and it could change things dramatically if it isn't in the right right place....just have to try it and see.

MSP mentioned something I had not thought of when using a sling. Most of the time my sling is in the pack until the game is down, and I need both hands free. I have the original front sight, and a williams peep....got plenty of elevation, although I hear of cases where a taller front sight is needed. Anyway, the little band slipped right over the sight with only a few nasty names, and it did seem to bring the forearm up just a wee bit when snuged down.

I will need to put some blue on the barrel and see where it is touching... if it becomes a problem.

Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for the suggestion. I think I am  really going to like this....if pretty is as pretty does, she is going to be a winner.

Respectfully, Russ

I just arbitrarily used the 4" figure and it worked well for the peep sight, I'm gonna shoot my other scope sighted 22" Handi barrel with the same stock set to see how it does, I marked the forend so I could get the pressure pad in the same place each time and for a reference in case I need to move it. The scoped barrel has no front sight, so I could still use the barrel band if I choose to.

Tim...I was able to get to the range both days this week end....between showers I might add.

Anyway, I made a somewhat exciting discovery.
First off the new stock with the barrel band  did changed the impact at 100 yds.....about 3" to 10 o'clock high.
Secondly, I re-zeroed to 150 yards with the 405gr FB cast, at 1800 fps.
And, I figured out I can put the open sight back on...zeroed at 75...and by removing the aperature of the Williams peep, I can see the open sights quite well.
So I put the original open sights back on, along with the Williams. I now have two "zeroed" aiming points.  Should the need ever arise. It looks a little "weird", you might say....but it doesn't bother me, so I think I will leave it.

Got any more good thoughts you might want to share?

Thanks for your help on this project.

Russ

Kewl!!! Kind of a poor man's express sights, I like it!!! Sorry, no more ideas at this time, but if I do think of something, I'll be sure to share it!

Tim

EDIT: I do have something to share along the same way of thinking. I hunt without the aperture in the peep sight in all of my WGRS equiped guns, it works like a ghost ring,  but I carry the aperture with me if I need to make a longer shot within the range of the rifle depending on what it is. If the opportunity presents itself, it doesn't take long to screw the aperture in, and since longer shots usually offer more time.....
