10" .22WMR octagon barrel?
« on: May 01, 2005, 03:33:55 PM »
Went looking for a .22LR barrel and came home with a .22 mag instead. Does anyone know if the 22 magnum can be used in silhouette shooting? I really liked the look of the octagon barrel, but have heard that they are not as accurate. Anybody like to give thier ideas?
My 12" 22 hornet barrel can't be used in anything other than a local club shoot. Just starting out with the Contender and trying to gather all the info I can.
Thanks for any help or suggestions.

The 22 mag is a legal cartridge for NRA Hunter Pistol Silhouette.  (Big Bore) Not legal in Smallbore Hunter Pistol.

I used to shoot a 22 mag Octagon barrel.  With a 12x scope off the bench it would hold 2" groups at 100 meters.  Winchester ammo.  I even got into pulling the bullets and replaceing them with heavier bullets. 60 grain. These made a more reliable take down on the rams.

I have heard abt the octagon's being less acurate... but I can not prove it w/ the barrels that I have.. In the "hotter" cal.s the octagon gets hotter, faster, But I have never been in a hurry for follow-up shots... Marty
