A clean, lubed press is a happy press
« on: May 07, 2005, 07:50:50 AM »
When I was working on my Cowboy loads I was finging it more difficult to work the Dillon SDB, but I got them done.

After coming back from the range I decided it was time for an overhaul.  This was one I got off the internet and while it looked good on arrival I never did take it apart and clean/lube it.  Just screwed it to the bench and starting turning out 45 Colt loads.

Probably have been doing this for my brother and me for about a year now and 45 Colt brass is more "exciting" to size than 32 Longs.

Let's see what I found:  it was all there and functioning BUT it needed a bit of work.
1) the wave bearings had worn smooth
2) the cam on the back of the ram was caked in hard grease
3) if it was made out of space-age polymer (plastic) is was worn out.

I figure it took me about 2 hours to get it off the bench, tear it down, find all the spare parts in my junk drawer and rebuild and mount it back on the bench.  Only lost the bent metal "thingy" that goes on top of the shell plate to eject the rounds into the bin.  not too bad for me at all.

Now I have decided to tear the others down and go on and get them all back to factory specs.

Life is good on the ranch....
