I know one particular 270 that has accounted for 2 dall sheep, 1 elk, 2 moose, 4 carabou, 1 black bear, 4 blacktail, and 2 whitetail deer. It belongs to a buddy of mine, its an old Rem 700 that his dad got for 100 bucks, he had it reblued and had to have 5" cut off the end of the barrel where it was bulged, so its 19" barrel. 130-150gr bullets have all done the trick. Its not much to look at but has worked well.

It is just as capable as any medium caliber out there. Personally, not my cup of tea but I am a huge fan of it's brother, the 280.

The .270 Winchester cartridge (a .30/06 cartridge case necked down to .277 inches) is a fine cartridge for non-dangerous North American big game up to and including moose as long as an appropriate bullet of sufficient weight is well-placed.

Jack O'Connor, a well-known hunter, author, and gun-scribe of the mid-20th. century championed the .270 Winchester and used it to take game as large as the huge Alaskan Brown Bears of Kodiak Island.

However, it must be remembered that O'Connor was an outstanding rifleman and excellent marksman... and was reknown for placing his bullet in the game's kill zone.

Personally, I wouldn't hunt dangerous game like the "big bears" with anything less than a .338 Winchester magnum loaded with 250 grain Nosler Partitions, but that is a decision hunters must make for themselves.

Just my 2¢, other's opinions may differ...

Actually Jack O'Connors Brown Bear rifle was a 375 H&H. I am not even sure if he used one of his 270's on Grizzly bears or not but he certainly used a 30-06 on several of them. He did use various 270 rifles on game up to Moose and Elk regularly.

The point O'Conner kept stressing, is that the .270 was no great cannon. But flat trajectoty, mild recoil, and an accurate gun, were all anyone needed to become an excellent marksman and successful hunter. (With a little practice). He actually set the bottom limit for an all around big game rifle for the lower 48 at the 7x57 Mauser. Probably because that was what his wife used. :lol:
And I don't remember him writing about using anything on grizzlies, other than the .30-06.

Yep, and so are a whole lot of others. Point being is that you don't need a piece of shoulder-mounted artillery to have a satisfactory hunt.

Others like to quote the infamous Jack OConner - why? The limits of what I would use are set by my abilities and the habitat that I hunt in. Not OConner's opinions. The .270 is a great gun, and so are other smaller calibers.

One of the best all around big game calibers
there is. I just bought one of the 270 WSM
rifles, I hope I keep the same opinion of it
that I have for the .270 Win.
