Geocache question with legend C
« on: May 04, 2005, 07:24:26 AM »
Does anyone know how to download geocache (waypoints from geochching.com)?  into Garmin Legend C.  The EasyGPS and the ExpetGPS do not support Legend C.

juchri:  You have run into a tough one on this issue.  What you are facing is that the Legend C uses a USB connector to transfer data from the pc to the gps.  While USB mapping/data software is appearing EasyGps and others were designed around the serial port.

But, EasyGps software does have a USB option for the Garmin 76C and the 60C.  I have seen it suggested that Legend C users check off the 76C in preferences and the USB option becomes available.  Then select the USB option.  I believe there is the risk of compromising your gps if you do this. :(

My suggestion is to review the option in EasyGps(free download).  Once it is clear, pickup the phone and ask Garmin support if it is safe to use this option.  There is a caution on the Garmin support page regarding downloading software designed for another unit.  It may require a trip to the factory.

I tried "drag" waypoints from EasyGps to MapSource on my computer and it did not work.

The Garmin website says the Legend C is USB compatible only.  Given that information, there are E-Bay vendors selling a USB adapter cable from Mini-USB to Serial Port.

So the question is the only change in the cable structure, the software, or both.  It might be worth a call to the vendor to make sure that you are buying what you want.

Thanks to Savages post I did look at E-Bay and found the item he was referring to.  If the answers are right this could be a low cost answer.  Or you could just keep punching in the Lat/Longs.

I love the size of the Legend and Legend C.  I think I would have been very happy with the Legend C.  I believe they are the ideal size for the outdoors.  The expanded memory of the Legend C allows one to store a lot of maps.

Based on cost my next choices are the Garmin Gpsmap 60C and the GpsMap 76C.  The large memory made me settle on the 76C.  Currently I have topo maps for the whole State of California, and parts of NV, OR, WA, ID, and MT.

The size of 60C is larger then the Legend series.  The 76C is slightly larger yet.  It is not a problem for me, but it could be for some.  The 76C has a more detailed base map.  The reason they are slightly wider is because the batteries set on their side instead of on end.  This makes for battery contact when being bounced around.

Bringing us back to the subject of geocaching and the ability to download Lat/Longs for caches the 60C and 76C have the advantage of having two(2) gps to pc ports.  One is the older round 4-pin connector.  This offers external power and serial port connection.  I purchased a cable from an after market provider.  It works great.  The 76C came with the mini-usb(gps) to usb(pc) cable.  I understand that some 60C's came with both cables.  Maybe DAVE IN WA could help on this one.

I still use the old Legend and I believe that Garmin is tweaking the performance.  satellite reception seems to have improved some.  It is a good unit.  The 76C seems to receive the same satellites but with a stronger signal.  This make sense because the 60C and 76C have larger antenna's.

daddywpb is running into a problem with his Legend C and the answer maybe to exchange it.  He is fortunate to have a vendor who will exchange a gps.  Many will not exchange electronic items.  I had a problem with my orginal Legend after some months.  I sent it to Garmin and they sent me a replacement.  I have had no additional problems.  Both Garmin and Magellan are noted for their within warranty period support.

I suspect that support for those models that have the newer usb connector for geocaching is not far out.
