Cowboy casters take note
« on: May 07, 2005, 07:57:23 AM »
When I was at the dentist I mentioned I was into CAS and also cast my own bullets.  He smiled at me and you would think I was his long lost brother.

Seems the x-ray film they use has a piece of think lead over it and they have a heck of a time getting rid of it legally.  Can't dump it in the trash and companies that remove it charge a pretty penny.

So I come out of there with about 4 grocery bags full of these pieces that are about 1x1 inch and thick as a piece of paper.  It takes a bunch to melt down into bullets but it is lead and it does work.

There is a bit of trash remaining after they have melted but you skim that off and you're in business.  I usually throw in one or two of my WW ingots so I have no idea of the make up of the lead

I got some antimony and tin off ebay and put some of that in too.  If in doubt add more stuff.

All to say it might be a source for you if you are having difficulty finding lead.

That x-ray film stuff is nice, soft lead.  It's perfect for cap & ball or muzzle loader bullets.  The local gun shop collects from at least a few dentists.
