HORNADY INTERLOCK VS THE BOATTAIL BULLET
« on: May 03, 2005, 02:38:16 AM »
I have a question for the guys that are heavy into handoading,I have to say have used the 165 grain interlock SP bullet for almost 35 years in my A3-03 springfield sporter 20 inch barrel and the deer never gone far once the bullet was placed behind the front shoulder, being a bow hunter for 35 plus years would always favor the lung area of a deer.
I am now thinking in reloading again for the 06 Handi single shot but some thought were to change to the 165 grain Hornady SPBT
My powder of choice for the 06 is 3031 bullet speed around 2450 @ have taken deer out to 200 yards with this bullet, would the SPBT have a edge over the SP bullet

lonewolf - I don't see any need to change bullets.  You have had notable success with the interlock bullet and I don't see where the boattail is going to improve on that at all.

There was an article in one of the noted gun rags comparing the accuracy of the boattail bullets and the flatbased bullets at distances out to 300 yds and the difference in desing didn't make any difference in accuracy out to those distances.  The boattail desgin helps reduce drag over longer distances and is favored in long range target and hunting.  But at the distances you have taken whitetail (200 yds), there is no need to change.  JMHO.  Mikey.

Hornady Interbond

I use the Hornady Interbonds in my 30-06. It shoots very accurately and is a very good game bullet. If you just want to play around and try and reload something more accurate, give them a try. Sounds like you are doing well with what your are using but us reloaders always like to experiment and tinker.

Hornady's BTSP in .308 165 gr. is both a boattail and an interlock design - I've been reloading them for a few years.

Are you confusing them with the SST or Interbond?

The use of boattails in rifles dedicated to hunting big game is a waste of time in my estimation. They certainly have a place in long range target shooting, but in truth, they have their greatest advantage when velocity drops below the speed of sound. If you use them for hunting, you take the chance of core seperation or pay a premium price for those that will stand up.

lonewolf7396,
Where's your Bass Pro?  I live about 20 minutes from the one here in Gwinnett County, GA.

I use Hornady 190 grain boat tails in my sporterized 03-A3 and it shoots them just fine and it kills deer just fine.  The rifle has the original 2-groove barrel dated 9-43 and generally puts 3 shots into less than 1.5 inches at 100 yards.  That's all I've ever asked of it.  I don't need a bullet that heavy for deer hunting but at the time I worked up the load, I was looking for something that would work on black bear, and even moose and elk, in a pinch.
