got stainless?
« on: May 08, 2005, 08:26:14 AM »

anyone ever looked at guns on this site?  those two pictures really caught my eye... 316 stainless steel tennis ball mortar (seems like a pretty light projectile for such a heavy duty barrel... i love the angle adjusting wheel though), and 68 cal cannon.

thats the site if you want to scroll down and read about it.

They sure look purdy and they sure won't rust. A lot of work went into those projects.

My only problem with using 316 is that it has a yield strength of only about 30,000psi. Where safety is concerned, that's down on the low end of the scale when it comes to firing projectiles with BP. In this game, when it comes to the strength of your materials, MORE is better.

Very good point.  The chromium that is added (to make stainless) is added for one of two reasons - abrasion resistance or corrosion resistance. - not strength nor for machinability.
