New Camo .280
« on: May 09, 2005, 04:20:31 AM »
I stopped at a shop on Saturday that had a large selection of Handi's and NEF shotguns.  They had several of each with the Camo Laminated stock and the "NEF" medallian in the stock.  I walked out with a .280.  It's my first .284 caliber (although I am still on an eternal search for the elusive 7X57).

I don't believe that the NEF medallion is very rare ( I saw a couple at shop in Virginia recently) but the price was only $40 more than what Wal Mart is selling regular Handi's for.  So I figured the nicer bluing, Camo stocks and the nice NEF medallion were worth that.

I've since picked up all the reloading components for the .280.  I bought some Sierra 160 gr boattails and Speer 130 gr soft points.  Any suggestions on good loads?

Thanks.

Congrats on the rifle!!!  That is the exact rifle I got when I was drawn for a Michigan elk tag.  Wish I could give you some specific loads for it, but 99% of my shooting was with factory stuff...
One thing I can tell you is that I shot all the factory stuff I could find before my hunt...from Hornady Light Mag in 139gr to Speer Nitrex with 160gr. Grand Slams and everything in-between.  There wasn't a single bullet or brand that didn't shoot well...she liked everything.  You will probably find the only downfall to that new rifle of yours is the HEAVY trigger pull from the factory.

Thank you for the info, Dakota.  I did pick up a couple boxes of Rem 150 gr. to break it in a little.  Sounds like its gonna be an easy one to like.

EVOC ONE,

The only problem with your new rifle is that it is excellent at just about EVERYTHING!  Kind of hard, for me at least, to justify buying another rifle when that .280 Handi makes a great rifle for anything from varmints to elk.

Jim,
This is a hobby. You don't have to justify another gun, barrel or hunting trip. If you want it, just do it.

HC, Just to update the list, I've bought a 7x64 brenneke, 25-06 Handi, 30-06 UltraComp, and a 30-06 UltraComp barrel since that pic was taken... The 25-06 is at the gunsmith's being rebored to 338-06 right now, too....

[I got to get out to the gun store Quickdtoo is getting ahead of me. ]

Yeah, good luck with that.  :) I still only have three. But that seems to be all I shoot anymore. I took my Ruger .22-250 out latley, along with my .223 Handi, but I really like shooting them.

Congrats on the purchase of that new rifle. [/quote]

:-D  :-D  :-D  My biggest problem is when I go to the range, I only have so many gun cases, so I have to decide which rifles I really want to take with me..........So having only 3 Handis can be a blessing! Decisions, decisions????  :? And since getting into handloading, this has become an even bigger dilemna.....
