I know it may not occur very often but i was thinking about the 30-06 case. Is there a wildcat out there that is based on the 30-06 case but been necked up to take a 44 caliber bullet?

If I remember correctly, back in the 60s or 70s there was a cartridge called the .44 Automag. A .30-06 case was cut down to standard .44mag length to be used in an auto pistol, (the wildey maybe). As far as full length I think the .411 Hawk is the largest that has been done successfully. Any larger and you lose any useable shoulder to headspace on. But I could be wrong.

Yes there are,

375-06, 375-06AI, 375-06JDJ and maybe some others.

Varmiter - there is a fella who posts on Graybeard on ocassion who took a M48 Mauser and converted it to a 444 wiadcat using blown out 30-06 brass. This way he can shoot a 444 caliber rifle and not have to mess with bolt problems. Apparently he does well with it. I apologize for not recalling his name but possibly if he reads this he can repost what he did to get that caliber and give us some insights as to how it does. HTH. Mikey.

I knew there was alot of cartridges based on the 30-06 case, but i never had seen or heard of one bigger than the 375. Thnaks for all of your help. Hopefully he will chime in.

I have another question......where can i find a complete listing of all of the ackley improved catridges and the ballistics on each?

I`ve never seen anything on a .44 cal baed on the 06 case but if it were done it would be a straight walled case. I have a .411 hawk which is based on the 06 case and fires a .411 bullet. With this bullet dia. the case is nearly straight walled and I have only acouple of .001`s of shoulder to head space on. I got a deal on this one, but I think that the .375 is really a better bore for the 06 case. If you want to look at some of what I think are the best wildcats based on the 06 case go to www.z-hat.com and take a look at the Hawk line of cartridges.

Ok. Thanks for the link. Now on to a project that will more than likely take place if i can find some info on it.

I have a bull barreled handi rifle in 223. Would it be possible to have it chambered for the 223 AI? I know its possible, but there's some questions i haven't been able to find answers to.......
1. Is there an increase in pressure when you shoot the 223 AI compared to the 223 rem.?

2. Would the frame of the handi rifle handle the catridge?

3. Where can i find ballistic info on the catridge compared to the 223 rem.
