Unless you're hunting some really big bucks, I'd use a 158 grain Jacketed Soft point in either gun, provided your ranges are short and your marksmanship is up to it.  Hollowpoints are okay for defense, but an expanding soft point will most likely exit and leave a better blood trail, should one be necessary.  A 357 rifle is just the ticket for deer in the thick woods, many thousands of deer are taken with them every year.  Bigger deer or feral hogs might require something bigger, or at least heavier, like a 180-gr. flat nosed cast bullet.  HTH.

Give Winchester supreme 180 gr Nosler partition loads a try. My Marlin loves them, and with the partition design they won't overexpand or underpenetrate. Also at range (75-150 yards), they retain their velocity better than lighter loads. It's an exeptionally accurate load in both my Python and Marlin, can't recomend them enough!  They're not a cheap load, but mabey the best commercial .357 hunting load ever. Corbon 180 JSP's are exellent as well.

I've killed quite a few deer with both a revolver, and rifle in 357 magnum. I suggest either 158g XTP-FPs or a good SP for deer. Although I've killed deer with HPs in both the revolver, and rifle, I don't recomend them.

Hey lubbockdave my .357 marlin really likes the gold dot bullets with a max load of h110. Last year I killed a nice 9pt with it , did a good job, bullet went thru both sides and left a good blood trail. The deer only went about 50 yards and he even went up hill and fell close to a woods road so he was easy to drag to the truck. Guess he knew he was going home with me.

Hammerhead said it. If you can stomach paying $15.00 bucks for 20 rounds. That is by far the best factory round I've tried.
Now you can take my advice, but I wouldn't listen to anyone else unless they have a gender. You might try establishing your own gender as well, that way I'll know wether or not to tip my hat to you, or shake your hand.

If you want to use Speer Gold dots then you are better off using the 158gr GDSP not the HP version.  I got great penetration when I took 2 does last season and both fell within sight!

I second the Winchester Supreme 180-gr. Partitions.

Next choice would be from Hornady.
45 ACP 230-gr. Double Tap Gold Dot = 1,010 fps / 15.3" & .95"    :D

Aim for the Triangle Area between armpits & throat.
