Author Topic: Question:Ruger 3 screw BH and New Model BH and Vaquero (Read 620 times)

Are they the same frame? Will they accept the same kind of grips?

I just bought 2 older (3screw) guns with XR3 RED on the frame and am looking for pearl or ivory (plastic) grips for my wife to put on them.

I've seen grips advertised for BH/Vaquero but don't know if that inlcudes the 3 screw BH.

Although I've owned several Ruger SA's, I'm not much on Ruger history. If you don't get an answer here try www.rugerforum.com. They have some guys that can tell you anything you ever wanted to know about a Ruger.

There are XR3 Frames and XR3-Red Frames for the three screw rugers. The New Models are a separate grip frame all together.

I have the new model BH. The first thing I did when I got this BH was change the grips to rubber grips for the recoil. Just used the BH for new grips.

The new sized Rugers will use the XR3 grip panels, and vice-versa, but not the XR3-RED or the "Old" New Models, the "new" new model gripframe spring mounts are different from the 3 screw, but the contours of the grip itself are the same as the original XR3 three screw.

All I originally wanted to know is: Will aftermarket grips that I see advertised in various places for Blackhawk/Vaquero fit my 3 screw Blackhawk?

And I am concluding from what you said Flint "..but the contours of the grip itself are the same as the original XR3 three screw.." is that they WILL fit.

Tallyho, take the grips off your gun and read what is on the lower left corner of the grip frame. It will be an XR3Red or just an XR3. I am not sure about the fit but at least you can find out what you have and ask others.

Done that Flash. Both guns are XR3RED. Just didn't know if those were/are the same shape as current Blackhawks and Vaqueros 'cuz I see lots of grips advertised for current (new - but not "really new" ) BH and V's.

I think they are the same shape, from what Flint replied above.
