I put a new barrel on my swede!

i had my gunsmith put a new mediem heavy douglass barrel on my swede sporter.
 i cant wait to see how it shoots. i had him throat it for 140gr. bullets. i have no need for 160 grainers.
  i,d like to put it in a nice stock, any ideas?

coopershooter - what is the twist on that Douglas barrel?  Is it the same as the military barrel or is is set up with a slightly slower (??) twist like the target rifles had?  How long is the barrel.  You had mentioned in previous posts that you had a 96 that was setup scout style - is that the one you had rebarrelled??  

There was an article in a recent Shotgun News by Fortier about the Swede 6.5 target rifles and he listed some of the match loads he used that gave fabulous groups.  

Now, before I flap my jaws any more I'm going to have to find out what I did with that article...........

For a stock - Richards is supposed to have a micro-fit for the 96/38 but I guess it takes a while to get one (that was my experience - they take a long time to get a stock out, but they are nice stocks).  You can also get one from Boyd's for about $70-80, I think.  I got one for a 98 action for about that much a couple of years ago - I'm sure the price has gone up a bit but the stock looks good in the rough (haven't worked with it yet). And, check out the adds from some of the sponsors to these sites - some of the custom stocks I have seen advertised are just beautiful.  HTH.  Mikey.

I THINK THE TWIST IS 1 IN 9 LIKE THE ORIGINAL BARREL. RICHARDS HAS SOME NICE STUFF! THEY WONT CUT A BARREL CHANNEL FOR AN AFTERMARKET BARREL, SO FOR NOW, I,M STICKING WITH THE CHEAP PLASTIC STOCK. SOME DAY I,LL PUT A NICE PIECE OF WOOD ON.
 AND NO, THE SCOUT BARREL IS THE MIL. STEPPED ONE, CUT OFF AT 18 INCHES. NOTHING IS SAFE INSIDE ABOUT 300 YARDS!  BOTH OF THOSE RIFLES HAVE TIMNEY TRIGGERS. I HAVE A MINTY MOD. 38 CARBINE, THAT I,M LEAVING ALONE.

His complaint was that on brain shots the 160 grain bullets from his 6.5x53 had a tendency to bend, and thus wander off course before they reached the brain.

That's because he's see the superior cartridge his father uses and couldn't bear to have the "lesser 6.5".

you probably right! i dont usually give in to macho b-s. i use just enough to get the job done. and i can usually apply the cartridges accuracy well enough to get the job done. i,m not fond of recoil, so i stick to what some consider smaller cartridges. on the few animals i've shot with the 6.5, i never felt i'll equiped.

My favorite rifle is a customized M98 in 6.5 Swede, and it's a tackdriver.  I'm going to load a few 6.5x55s for moose hunting in Alaska, to supplement my heavy lever actions.  Do you have any experience with the Hornady 140 gr SST?  I've used Speer and Norma 160s on mule deer sized game, but the 140s are more accurate.

In all reality though for big game the size of a moose any group you can put inside a pie plate is more than adequate.
It isn't varmint hunting afterall. :wink:

If I'm not mistaken the original Swedes had a 1 in 7 1/2" barrel twist, and handle pretty much all bullet weights well.  I have three of the M96s.  My Remington Classic in 6.5x55 while rather accurate has a 1 in 9" twist and doesn't do all that well with the 140gr. bullets.  I'm not certain why.  It could be the bullet length or the configuration.  In any event it seems we would have done better to keep the same barrel twist  Best wishes.
