Avoid Montana Precision bullets
« on: May 18, 2005, 01:32:00 PM »
I bought a box of Montana Precision Swaging bullets for my 40-65 WCF.  Contrary to the company name, these bullets are cast, and very poorly cast at that.  I've been trying out different bullet weights and styles prior to buying a mould or two for my rifle, but the money spent on Montana Precision bullets turned out to be money wasted.  Severe flashing is on about half the bullet noses.  All of the bullets show wrinkles and poor fill out from pouring lead that was too cool.  I would have thrown these back into the pot, and I would be too embarrassed to consider selling them, but it seems Montana Precision may have a higher shame threshold than me.

If it was just one or two bullets, I might understand.  However, when companies start shipping entire boxes of bad bullets, I figure I should warn other reloaders.  These bullets are barely good enough for fire forming your brass.

If you need to buy your lead bullets for BP rifles, buy Lyman.  Their bullets are much, much better quality.  I bought some of the Long Range High Performance Lyman bullets, and they look pretty good.  Not as good as home cooked, but pretty good.

I've used some of their .458" 500gr bullets in my 45-120, no problems with them....but used a bunch of Cast Performance LBT gas checked bullets and am real happy with several of their .458" offerings.

Have you contacted them and given them a chance to make it right with you? I agree they shouldn't have shipped if in that condition but you should give them a chance to make it right and then if they refuse for sure no one should do business with them.

You are indeed correct Graybeard. I had ordered from Montana Precision Swaging and received some very good paper patched bullets from them in the past. I just quit using them because I could get the bullets a little less expensive and real good quality from Dave Jennings..  :D

I would have called them up if it was only five or six messed up bullets.  When the entire box is a mess, I chalk it up to a learning experience for myself.  I learned that there is a serious lack of QC, and I don't want to waste time, money, or gun powder on any more of their bullets.  That's just my approach, but I wouldn't fault someone else for giving the company another chance.

This was too big of a screw up for me to bother giving them that second chance.  Seriously, these bullets are uglier than the first bullets I ever dropped out of a mould, years ago.  I have never bothered to load a bullet that's as bad as these are, I have thrown them back in the pot.

I picked out a Postell bullet mould to add to my collection, so my reliance on store bought bullets for this rifle is over, anyway.  My next mould will probably be a 260 grain FN design to duplicate the original bullets used in this round.  My cousin has one of our great grandfather's '86s in 40-65, so I'll be offering him some of the lighter bullet loads.

Maybe a new lot that they just got in and didn't inspect it.....I'd give them a call and see if they'll make it right.........what have  you got to loose?
