my buddy bought a wallmart 917hb. for $190.  i loaned him a simmons 6-18 pro airgun scope, so he could take it to the range and test it out.  the trigger broke at a pretty crisp 5.5lbs( on the gauge). his 50 yard groups were nice round groups all touching around 3/8 or so. the one hundred yards groups were under 3/4inch. with a hint of vertical stringing. he was shooting off a machine rest and rear bag.
is this a big deal or do all these things shoot this well?
he only shot 35 shots in all. seven five shot groups. there were three flyers that bumped the groups out a little.   then shot a ten shot group with two types of ammo and gets a  1in. group?
so do all marlins shoot that good or did he get a lucky one?

Yup!!! They do indeed. He can shim the trigger or get a Rifle Basix trigger from Midsouth for $65 and shipping that will get the trigger down to 16oz. I have a 917V and a 917VS, both have RB triggers set at 16oz. They shoot the federal Vmax at .6"-.8" at 100yds consistently. For $190 he has a 917V, there is no 917hb, although it does have a heavy barrel. Marlin makes a 917V, 917VS and 917VSF. There are some 917VSL with the desert camo stocks around that were special purchase models. If you would like more specific info on the Marlin 17hmrs and 17hmrs in general, check out the forums at RFC....

Why can't I find the 917 on Walmart.com?  Has it been replaced or is there a comparable model?  Very interested now in one of these.

How was the bolt throw and chambering?

The 917V is a normally stocked firearm at Walmart, so it won't be in the special order catalog....Sports South, Walmart's supplier has been out of them most of the time for quite a while now, so you'd have to be lucky to find one in stock, they are extremely popular and sell quickly....

Got one yesterday - now I just need to figure out what scope to slap on it.  I'm very impressed with it!

Any tips on what to do to it to make it even better, other than the trigger replacement?  Anything to help smooth up the action/bolt throw?

And are there any aftermarket mags out there, especially more than 7 rounds?

You can slather the bolt with flitz metal polish, then work it a bunch to smooth it up a lot. Then disassemble the bolt to clean it.

Before you replace the trigger with an RB, you might try the trigger shim...

Don't know about longer mags, most shooters want shorter mags! They can be cut down easy enough, don't know anyone at RFC that's asked for a longer mag, though.
