outers foul-out 3 for cleaning BPCR
« on: March 30, 2005, 07:53:20 AM »
I just purchased a model 1888 Trapdoor springfield.
I have been cleaning the bore for two or three times a day for about a week. I still am getting black stuff on the patch after using a bronze brush.
I am tempted to buy the outers foul-out system from Midway $69.99.
It appears I would have to buy the outers rod as well for about $20 plus tax.
Do I have to buy the special outers rod or can my usual stainless steel rod do just as well. If I bought the kit plus rod I could easily spend in excess of $100.
Thanks:
Archer

Load up 5 light rounds of smokeless powder using 300 gr. jacketed bullets and fire them.  Easiest way I've found to clean up a fouled bore.  I wouldn't suggest feeding your rifle a steady diet of jacketed bullets but 5 rounds won't hurt it and will clear your bore.  The Hawk bullets would be great as they're annealed dead soft but would be a bit pricey for 5 rounds.

Here's a homemade electronic bore cleaner that works great.  I've used it on a number of milsurp guns with good results.  I also used it years ago on a trapdoor.

I use a single D cell in a radio shack battery holder instead of the flashlight and an ohm meter to tell when the process is completing.

Does two weeks of cleaning in two hours or less!

That is probably the soft steel from the barrel being worn away.  Give it a rest.  You are doing harm at this point.

Cleaning BP is easy.  Run how water down the bore.  Enough to heat the barrel and flush out any salt containing substances.  I use a hose and brass tube on my kitchen wash basin.  Hot water comes from the household water heater.  Swab it with wet patches until they come out clean.  Water, windex, moose milk, whatever, it does not matter.  Oil your clean warm clean bore.  You are now done.  It takes 5-minuets.
